Bengaluru & Me: A Love Letter To My First Solo Trip

As students, most of us settle into a familiar rhythm, same campus, same friends, similar conversations, and predictable weekends. Even when we travel, we usually carry our comfort circle with us. It’s fun, but it rarely challenges the way we think.

This time, I wanted something different. So I took my first solo trip to Bengaluru, booked Zostel Koramangala, and decided to travel without an itinerary or a travel buddy. Not because I wanted an adventure story, but because I wanted to step outside the bubble I didn’t even realise I was stuck in.

Koramangala is one of Bengaluru’s most energetic neighbourhoods, but the hostel added its own layer of perspective. At Zostel Koramangala, I met people whose worlds operated nothing like mine:

backpackers on long-term travel

freelance designers and digital nomads

tattoo artists exploring the country

international travellers discovering India

students from completely different background.

Travelling with friends is comforting, but it keeps you inside a shared reality. Here, every conversation brought a new perspective. Not dramatic, just real. It showed me how varied life can be outside the familiar routines we grow up in.

One of the biggest benefits of solo travel as a student is flexibility. I wasn’t following a schedule or waiting for anyone’s approval to try something.

I explored cafés I’d saved from Instagram, walked into streets I’d never heard of, browsed random shops near Koramangala, and followed impulses that would’ve been vetoed in a group plan.

Some of my favourite memories happened organically:

hanging out with the people I met at the hostel

stopping by a lake we came across while heading somewhere else

staying out late just because the city felt safe and alive

trying food places only because they looked interesting

having conversations that didn’t feel rehearsed or predictable

Nothing was rushed. Nothing was forced. It was the kind of ease you only get when you’re travelling alone.

This trip didn’t “transform” me in a dramatic way. But it made me think.

When we stay around the same people for too long, we unknowingly adopt the same ideas about what life should look like job, stability, routine, and the usual 9–5 structure we’ve been taught to follow.

Talking to travellers with wildly different lifestyles made me pause. I realised I’ve always had a soft corner for the backpacking lifestyle, but I’d been too cautious to acknowledge it. Solo travel didn’t give me all the answers, but it made the questions clearer.

It reminded me there’s more than one way to build a life.

And that maybe, stepping out alone once in a while is the only way to see it.

You don’t need a perfect plan. You don’t need a huge budget. You just need one decision: to go.

Say yes to the unfamiliar. Book the hostel. Talk to people outside your usual circle. Explore without rushing. Let the city teach you something your routine never will.

For me, my Bengaluru solo trip wasn’t loud or cinematic, it was simple, steady, and more impactful than I expected. Zostel Koramangala wasn’t just a place to stay; it became a space to rethink what I want out of life.

And that shift is something I’ll carry forward long after I’ve left the city.
