A harsh drought had destroyed the harvests, and people wandered desperately in search of food. Many lost their lives reaching out for even a hand’s breadth of hope.

Old Gheorghe lived in a quiet village, worn down by the harsh grip of famine. He woke that morning weak but determined to add another day to the fragile thread of his life. Leaning on his staff, he walked long miles in search of food. “Even just a small piece of bread… just a crumb…”

He arrived at his grandson’s house, his only remaining relative. “I’ve come to ask for a scrap of bread, my son,” Gheorghe said, his voice trembling. “Hunger isn’t fed with tears, Grandpa. Go before my family sees you,” the young man replied sharply.

Bitterly, Gheorghe tightened his coat around him and moved on, wordless. He tried a few neighbors, but no one could help. With a hollow ache in his heart, he trudged home, a window opening onto emptiness. Soon, he reached the house of a young widow, Elena. His legs gave way, and he fell to his knees.

Elena, working in her garden, rushed to him. “What’s wrong?” she asked. “I’ve been out since morning,” Gheorghe whispered. “I found nothing to eat… I can’t go on.”

Without hesitation, Elena ran inside and returned with a handful of corn kernels and a cup of cold water. “Here, Grandpa. From me, a little; from God, much more!”

Old Gheorghe accepted the small offering with gratitude. “May God bless you for your kindness,” he said, eyes shining with tears. For him, it was more than a meal — it was proof that generosity survives even the harshest times.

The young widow’s small act of charity rekindled hope in Gheorghe’s heart, a quiet reminder that God often works through human hands.
