A Conversation That Made Me Re-Examine the Tech Job Market

A few days ago I had a surprisingly intense conversation with a friend about careers and the tech job market.

For context, I come from a web development background. I’m actively building my skills in the frontend and web ecosystem.

My friend, on the other hand, comes from the AI/ML side.

Recently he decided to step away from AI/ML work and shift toward automation-related roles. During our conversation he shared a take that honestly caught me off guard.

He said:

“Web development is dead.

MERN stack development is finished.

AI tools can build apps now.

Engineering roles won’t matter much anymore.

If you want to stay relevant and earn money fast, move into automation.”

He sounded completely convinced.

At first I wanted to argue. But instead, I decided to test the claim.

So I spent some time digging through job market reports, industry data, and hiring trends. I also used Claude as a research assistant to help organize information and identify patterns.

What I found was far more nuanced than the simple “web dev is dead” narrative.

The Tech Job Market Right Now Is a Paradox

Two seemingly opposite things are happening at the same time.

Tech layoffs are happening. Tech hiring is still growing.

So far in 2026, more than 52,000 tech workers have already been impacted by layoffs, while 2025 saw around 246,000 layoffs across tech companies.

Those numbers are real and understandably alarming. However, another part of the data tells a different story.

Overall tech employment remains above pre-pandemic levels, and software engineering roles continue to grow with hundreds of thousands of projected openings over the coming decade.

This does not look like an industry collapsing. It looks like an industry restructuring itself.

Some roles are shrinking while others are expanding rapidly.

Why Layoffs Are Happening

A common explanation circulating online is that AI replaced developers.

The reality is more complicated.

A major driver behind recent layoffs comes from post-pandemic over-hiring between 2020 and 2023. During that period many companies dramatically expanded their workforce due to rapid digital demand and the rise of remote work.

Once growth slowed, companies began correcting that expansion.

AI does play a role in this shift, but mostly in a specific way.

It reduces the need for certain repetitive junior tasks, such as:

• Boilerplate coding
• Templated UI generation
• Simple ticket-based development tasks

At the same time, AI is creating entirely new categories of work.

Where the Demand Is Moving

Current hiring momentum in tech is concentrated around several key areas:

• AI and ML engineering
• Data engineering and MLOps
• Cybersecurity
• Cloud infrastructure
• AI-integrated product development

Cybersecurity and AI-related roles have seen particularly strong growth as organizations expand their digital infrastructure and defend against increasingly complex threats.

In other words, the industry’s skill distribution is changing.

The industry itself is still expanding.

Is Software Development in Danger?

The short answer is no.

The longer answer requires acknowledging an important shift.

The era when “knowing how to code” alone guaranteed a job ended

Today, developers are expected to contribute far beyond syntax.

Modern engineers create value through:

• System thinking
• Architecture design
• Product understanding
• Collaboration with AI-assisted tools

AI increasingly handles mechanical coding tasks.

Developers focus more on problem solving, system design, and decision-making.

What About Web Development?

Another strong claim from that conversation was:

“Web development is dead.”

But the broader picture suggests something very different.

The internet remains the foundation of modern digital business. Every startup, product, service, and platform relies on web infrastructure in some form.

Demand for web developers and digital product engineers continues as online services and e-commerce expand.

What has changed is the scope of web development.

Modern web development now includes:

• Performance optimization
• Accessibility and inclusive design
• Real-time applications
• Serverless architectures
• Scalable frontend systems
• AI-powered interfaces

The craft expanded significantly compared with what web development looked like a decade ago.

The Real Shift Happening in Tech

The biggest transformation taking place is not the disappearance of engineering roles.

It is the rising bar for what a skilled engineer looks like.

Developers who combine strong fundamentals with modern tools are gaining leverage.

Developers who rely on outdated workflows face increasing pressure.

AI does not eliminate the need for engineers. AI changes how engineers work.

My Honest Take

After that conversation and the research that followed, one conclusion stood out clearly.

Software engineering is not disappearing. The field is becoming more sophisticated.

The biggest risk today is not artificial intelligence.

The biggest risk is stagnation.

Developers who continue learning, adapting, and building meaningful systems will remain valuable.

Developers who stop evolving will struggle.

A Question Worth Asking

That conversation started with a bold statement:

“Web development is dead.”

After looking deeper, the reality appears far more complex. Tech careers are not shrinking. They are reshaping themselves faster than before. So the real question may not be whether web development is dying.

The real question might be:

Are we witnessing the next evolution of software development?
