How Knowing My Life Path Number Changed the Way I Make Decisions Subtitle: I thought it would be a fun party trick. It turned out to be a mirror I keep returning to.
I came to Numerology sideways.
Tarot found me first, and for a few years I was deeply focused there. Numerology felt, honestly, a bit too simple. Reduce your birth date to a single digit and suddenly the universe has explained you? It seemed like astrology’s less sophisticated cousin.
Then a mentor of mine — a woman I respected enormously for her rigorous thinking — suggested I calculate my Life Path Number and sit with it for a month before dismissing it. So I did.
I am a Life Path 7.
And within about four days, I stopped being dismissive.
What a Life Path Number Actually Is
For anyone reading this who’s never heard the term: in Numerology, your Life Path Number is derived from your full birth date, reduced through a specific addition process to a single digit between 1 and 9 (with a couple of what are called Master Numbers — 11, 22, and 33 — treated as exceptions).
The idea is that this number describes the core energy of your life — your natural strengths, your recurring challenges, the themes that will keep showing up for you whether you choose them or not.
A simple example: if you were born on 15 November 1990, you’d add 1+5+1+1+1+9+9+0 = 27, then 2+7 = 9. Life Path 9.
That’s the basic mechanism. Simple arithmetic. What’s not simple is what the numbers are said to mean, and how accurately those meanings can land.
What Life Path 7 Says About Me
The 7 is described as the seeker. Analytical, introspective, drawn to depth over surface. Needs solitude to function well. Can struggle with vulnerability and tend toward self-sufficiency to the point of isolation. Is energised by research, by questions that don’t have clean answers, by understanding systems from the inside.
Reader, I laughed out loud. Not because it was vague enough to apply to anyone — I’ve heard that argument and I take it seriously — but because it named specific things I’d never quite had language for.
I am someone who can spend three hours alone going deep on a topic and feel genuinely recharged. I am someone who finds small talk exhausting in a way I used to feel guilty about. I am someone who asks “but why does this work this way” about everything, including systems I professionally practice.
For years I thought these were flaws I should fix. The 7 framing recast them as a nature — something to work with rather than against.
The Decision That Changed
About six months after I started taking Numerology seriously, I was offered an opportunity to become part of a large group venture. Good people, good idea, potentially great for visibility and income. On paper, it made sense.
But every time I sat with it, something felt off. I kept telling myself I was being irrational, overly independent, scared.
Then I came back to the 7. The 7 is not built for collaborative consensus structures. The 7 works best with autonomy, with the ability to go deep without committee. The 7 in a large group with many voices tends to get noisy and frustrated.
I said no. I stayed solo. And every year since, I’ve been more certain that was the right call — not just for my wellbeing, but for the quality of my work.
Would I have made that decision without Numerology? Maybe. But I would have spent far longer fighting my own instincts and calling it fear.
What This Tool Is and Isn’t
I want to be clear: I don’t think your Life Path Number is destiny. I don’t think it tells you who to marry or what career to choose or whether this year will be hard. Any practitioner who uses it that way is overreaching.
What it offers is a lens. A starting point for self-inquiry that sometimes surfaces patterns you hadn’t consciously named. At its best, it does what all good inner-work tools do: it gives you a framework for understanding yourself with a little more compassion and a little less judgment.
How To Find Yours
Write out your full birth date as numbers. Add every single digit together. Keep reducing until you have a single digit (unless you land on 11, 22, or 33 — those stay as they are).
Then look it up — not on the first pop result that comes up, but somewhere thoughtful. Or, if you want an in-depth conversation about what it might mean for where you are right now, I offer Numerology consultations at guidinglightshruti.com.
Your number won’t tell you what to do. But it might, as mine did, help you trust what you already know.
