The Free ‘Cursor Killer’ IDE Has Landed (Save $20/Mo).

I’ve been a Cursor user for a while. Like, the $20/month Pro plan. It’s good. It really integrates AI into the VS Code workflow, and that multi-model support is nice. It felt like the standard.

But man, the AI coding space is moving fast. And honestly? I think I’m jumping ship.

Alibaba just dropped something called QODER back in August skywork. And after playing with it, it feels like the next step, especially if you’re tired of watching your AI credits dwindle.

Here’s the deal: QODER isn’t just another AI assistant slapped onto an editor. It’s built around this idea of agentic coding. Like, giving tasks to AI agents that work semi-autonomously.

The “Quest Mode” That Changes Things

This is the feature that blew my mind. It’s called Quest Mode.

Instead of me prompting for every little change, I can give QODER a whole task. Like, “Refactor this entire module to use the new API spec, update the tests, and run them.”

And it… just does it. It plans the steps, edits multiple files, runs commands, and only pings me if it gets stuck or needs approval getbind. Look, the competition is fierce.

• Cursor: Still the most polished, mature VS Code fork. If you need battle-tested reliability and want to pick your specific premium model (like Claude 4 or GPT-4.1), it’s the safe bet. But that $20/month adds up, and the free tier is pretty limited cursor.
• Windsurf: This one (from the Devin team now) is the budget VS Code fork option at $15/month. Its “Cascade” agent is solid, and the free tier gives you 25 credits a month, which is better than Cursor’s limits after the trial. Good if you need one-click deployment windsurf, eesel.
• Zed: This is the odd one out, but in a good way. It’s not a VS Code fork. It’s built from scratch in Rust, and it’s insanely fast. Like, GPU-accelerated fast. It also has great built-in collaboration and its own AI assistant panel. Plus, it’s open-source and only $10/month for Pro features. If raw speed and collaboration are your jam, Zed is worth a look zed.

Why QODER Wins… For Now
