May 29th is ‘International UN Peacekeepers Day’ — The Future of Peacekeeping?

Although the UN Peacekeeping mission was established in 1948, in the year 2002 the General Assembly dedicated May 29th to UN Peacekeepers as ‘Day of UN Peacekeepers’.

In 2025, while observing May 29th as

‘International UN Peacekeepers Day’ with the theme

“The Future of Peacekeeping”, brings upon a question mark too.

The reasons are, shrinking funds to the UN, many countries are increasing their defence budget and effectiveness of the peacekeeping operation.

On May 27, 2025 press.un.org/ shared the message of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

“Today, peacekeepers face increasingly complex situations in an increasingly complex world. The world needs the United Nations — and the United Nations needs peacekeeping that is fully equipped for today’s realities and tomorrow’s challenges.”

“During ceremonies at United Nations Headquarters, Secretary-General António Guterres will lay a wreath to honour the more than 4,400 UN peacekeepers who have lost their lives since 1948.

Medals will be awarded posthumously to 57 peacekeepers who lost their lives serving under the UN flag last year.”

The UN Peacekeepers delegate people belonging to the military, police and civilians from 119 countries.

They serve across the globe during armed conflicts, civil war and earthly hazards like earthquake or any such incidence.

Thus, it is the responsibility of all nations to strengthen the peacekeeping force and the United Nations organization economically, bringing timely and ethical reforms among the peacekeepers if and when necessary.

May 29th ‘International UN Peacekeepers Day’ is to express gratitude to the UN Peacekeepers and inspire them to serve the purpose in earnest.

Therefore, The Future of Peacekeeping not to raise a question mark but assurance of a bright future.
