St. Joseph Medical Center Surprises Edna Travis Elementary with Generous Donation

Tacoma Public Schools recently reported that St. Joseph Medical Center, part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, recently surprised Edna Travis Elementary School with a generous gift of $11,870! Travis Elementary was selected by St. Joseph team members as their chosen beneficiary, making the donation an unexpected and welcome show of support.

To express their gratitude, second-grade students from Ms. Elliot’s class performed the song “Thankful” for the St. Joe’s team during a special presentation.

Deepak Devasthali, President of St. Joseph Medical Center, presented the check to Travis Principal Lisa Gibbs. “I am presenting this gift on behalf of the entire team at St. Joe’s — this is a token of our support,” said Devasthali. “This is particularly special because Edna Travis is just down the street from St. Joe’s. This is our neighborhood, our kids.”

“This is an amazing gift for our school,” Lisa Gibbs commented. “We cannot wait to follow up and share how we use the funds and the impact it has on our school.”

Superintendent Josh Garcia also shared his appreciation for the hospital’s generosity. “You are first responders,” he said. “Every day you go above and beyond to take care of the people in this community; our staff, our students, and our families. This gift is very meaningful.”

While Principal Gibbs is still determining how the funds will be used, the focus will likely be on initiatives that support the health and wellness of the Travis community. She will collaborate with school and district staff to identify the best use of the donation.
