A routine geophysical survey conducted in the Baltic Sea in 2021 revealed something strange beneath the water. First, it resembled a natural formation of stones. On further examination, it became one of the most significant prehistoric discoveries in Europe.

The structure, which is now called the Blinkerwall, is not a fortuitous feature and is close to a kilometer in width across the seabed in the Bay of Mecklenburg. It is an artificial stone wall, built over 10,000 years ago by hunter-gatherers.

This is like a twist to a classic story. Small, mobile, and technologically simple are terms used to describe early human societies. The Blinkerwall implies that its planning, coordination, and environmental engineering were completed on a scale that does not fit such assumptions.

A wall beneath the water

The building is approximately 21 meters beneath the current sea level, approximately 10 kilometers out into the German coast at Rerik. It is composed of approximately 1,600 to 1,700 stones placed in a continuous line, which is approximately 970 meters in length.

The wall is approximately a meter in height in places. The structure was recorded by researchers led by Jens Geersen through sonar mapping, underwater imaging, and sediment analysis, with the results published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The structure is too regular to be attributed to glacial deposits or ice flow. The stones are laid in such a manner that it appears to be man-made as opposed to being accumulated naturally. More shocking about the discovery is that it is now submerged.

At the time of the construction of the wall, this was not underwater. It belonged to a dry environment, which was formed due to the withdrawal of Ice Age glaciers, lakes, open plains, and migrating animals.

Why build a wall during the Stone Age?

Animal behavior is the key to understanding the Blinkerwall. Animals like Reindeer are likely to trace the linear features on the ground, like ridges, shorelines, or fences. This tendency has been used by hunters in various areas to bring the herds into restricted areas.

This is the role that seems to have been played by the Blinkerwall. It was probably a drive lane, which guided reindeer towards a lakeshore or a narrow opening, where they could be more effectively trapped and hunted. Hunters did not have to run over the open land, chasing the animals, but instead, they created the terrain to do it.

It was not a temporary set-up. The construction of such a large wall would have involved coordinating labor, planning, and understanding seasonal animal behavior. It implies that it is used over time rather than as a single occurrence.

An environment that does not exist

One needs to recreate the setting that the wall was in to know it. Sea level was much lower in the early Holocene period (c.10,000 -11,000 years ago). The present Baltic bottom was a land surface, with freshwater systems and bare grazing land.

Cores of sediment extracted from the site indicate a previous lakeshore habitat. This is in line with the conclusion that the wall was not placed in a random manner. It was constructed in an area where the movement of animals could be forecasted and regulated.

This landscape was submerged by the increasing sea levels over time. The wall was left as it was and was covered with sediment until modern technology revealed it once again.

Reconsidering hunter-gatherer societies

The Blinkerwall is not a solitary freak show. It belongs to a larger body of evidence showing that hunter-gatherer societies could engage in large-scale environmental change. Nevertheless, this construction takes the scale a step higher.

It is one of the largest known Stone Age constructions in northern Europe and is almost a kilometer long. It questions whether agricultural societies were the first to begin monumental building. Social organization is another issue that the wall raises.

The organization of the movement of stones, the work of the structure, and its planning would have demanded the collaboration of more than small family groups. It identifies the existence of collective actions that may not necessarily be observable in the archaeological record.

Instead of thinking of these communities as naive or non-persistent, one can come to think of them as planners who knew landscapes well and worked on them carefully.

Hunting, strategy and efficiency

The Blinkerwall is not merely a construction, but a strategy. Hunting is a process that is usually envisaged to involve human beings and animals in direct contact. It is a different approach within this structure.

Hunters minimized uncertainty by constructing a barrier. They enhanced the predictability of movement and the efficiency of capture of animals. This would have directly impacted survival, particularly in areas where resources were seasonal, and competition might be intense.

It also implies a change of thinking. People were looking forward to nature rather than responding to it. They were coming up with interventions that were based on the patterns that had been observed and long-term knowledge.

The importance of this discovery today

Blinkerswall is not just important to archaeology. It is part of an emerging body of research that suggests that early human civilizations were more complicated than commonly believed.

Discoveries like this and the massive exchanges in areas such as Amazonia suggest that the role of human intervention on the environment has a strong historical background. The distinction is in the approaches. These systems were usually incorporated with the ecological processes and were not forced on them.

Introduced as a reminder that much of human history has been buried beneath the Baltic Sea, the Blinkerwall serves as a reminder that it has not been preserved because it is not the kind of thing that should be remembered.

Final thoughts and reflections

The picture of primitive man as an inactive member of a hostile environment is hard to maintain in the context of this discovery. The Blinkerwall is clearly designed, has been developed through teamwork, and has an understanding of ecological behavior.

It also shows the extent to which the past is yet to be discovered. Developments in underwater mapping and remote sensing are starting to show vanished landscapes due to an increase in the sea level. Every discovery gives further elaboration to a history that is much more intricate than previous models would have it.

The age of the wall is not the only significant aspect, but it is the logic behind it. It represents a perspective of thinking that includes observation, planning, and implementation. Such a mixture is still a primary focus of human societies.
