Modern Loneliness Has Created an Entire Industry

Somewhere along the way, emotional collapse became a luxury product.

People don’t disappear into the desert anymore. Now they book retreats.

You pay thousands of dollars to sit near beautiful landscapes with strangers who use phrases like: “nervous system regulation” and “intentional vulnerability.”

Everyone speaks softly. Everyone drinks herbal tea. Everyone looks exhausted.

And honestly?

The strange part is that some of it actually helps.

Not because the rituals are magical. Not because breathing exercises fix trauma.

But because modern life has made genuine emotional honesty feel almost impossible.

So people fly across the country just to sit beside strangers and admit: “I’m tired.” “I’m lonely.” “I don’t know how to keep doing this.”

That’s what nobody tells you about wellness culture.

Underneath all the branding, expensive retreats, and spiritual marketing, there are usually just emotionally overwhelmed people trying very hard not to go numb completely.

And maybe that’s the real business model: giving exhausted adults permission to feel something again.

Alex Korneliuk writes dark literary fiction about modern loneliness, addiction, emotional burnout, and people trying to stay alive in strange ways. Original chapters and novels → substack.com/@alexkorneliuk
