Just thought of sharing this experience with you all!

Yesterday we visited Hogenkal from Bengaluru (Uttarahalli). Started in the morning around 6.45 and google maps was showing 3 hour 5 minutes. (Via attibele — denkanikottai-anchetti. I did choose this route as I wanted to have breakfast @RameshwaramCafeBommasandra).

At Hogenkal we took a coracle ride (1500 receipt + 500 tips).

Other charges, Forest check post — 50 Rs. Local village/town panchayat -100 Rs. Parking inside hotel — 50 Rs.

We spent 90 minutes in water.

Then meal at the hotel where we parked car — 168 Rs. Rice, Sambar, Rassam, 2 types of vegetable curries, Pickel, Papad and butter milk (Food was good, we were very hungry and ate like as if we were starving for the last 2 days).

Started return journey around 4.45 PM and google maps was showing 3 hour 45 minutes (via anchetti — hunasanahalli — marala doddi — kadu shivanahalli — dodda maralawadi — harohalli. I took this route to avoid peak hour traffic to reach Uttarahalli in Bengaluru)

We reached home around 8.30 PM, as expected. All of us were super tired. ate our dinner and everyone slept by 10pm.

I woke up this morning after a good sleep of 8 Hours and thinking why were we so tired just for driving to a place which is around 130 kms (80 miles) away and why it took more than 3 hours to drive this distance. Isn’t it insane? Isn’t it an hour’s drive in USA, Europe or most of the developed nations?

My cousin who lives in a small town in Florida often drives to New York and back. she says one way it takes around 15 hours. Usually, she starts around 5 AM and reaches before 9 PM. (distance of around 1000 miles or 1600 kms). She says she is little tired after that long drive and will be ok the next morning after a good sleep.

Trust me, I am feeling a lot better today, but bit of tiredness is still there. And I am just thinking,

1. What kind of roads are we building?

2. Are our highways of real good quality and as per international standards?

3. If our highways are good, why do we hear that huge friction noise from tyre and road?

4. If we have good roads then one should be able to drive from Bengaluru to Udaipur in a day (1700 kms). As per google maps it is little over 29 hours. Almost double the time taken in USA.

5. I am just taking USA an example, but I have heard Autobahn in Germany are even better.

6. Will India be a developed Nation by 2047? Or is it just a myth? I am not blaming any one here. Just asking what do i need to do so that we are a developed nation by that time. How do I help my country reach that GOAL?

7. Here, I am simply comparing the highways of two countries, and the travel time in one is almost twice that of the other.

8. I see a lot of patches on our roads and on fly overs, trenches for rainwater flow make huge noise when driving and that restricts our speed a lot. And the biggest miss is smoothness in driving.

9. I asked one of my relative (who lives in Michigan), after his travel from Davanagere to Bengaluru. How was the experience? He said it was good. Then I asked, is it the same in USA? Then he said No. There is a huge difference in how you feel and the tiredness at the end of the journey, It is not the same.

10. We Indians are paying good amount of road TOLL, but why are we deprived of good roads in return?

11. Are we taking vacations to get relaxed? or get tired on bad roads?

12. Few express ways (for eg: Bengaluru — Mysuru) are good, I am not denying that. But on most of the highways we get tired just for a 6-hour drive, whereas the journey should be enjoyable.

ಹಾಗೇ ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ!

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ,

ನಿನ್ನೆ ನಮಗೆ ಆದ ಒಂದು ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ನಿಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ,

ನಿನ್ನೆ ನಾವು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಉತ್ತರಹಳ್ಳಿಯಿಂದ ಹೋಗೇನಕಲ್‌ಗೆ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದ್ದೆವು. ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಸುಮಾರು 6:45ಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರಟೆವು. ಗೂಗಲ್ ಮ್ಯಾಪ್ಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಯಾಣದ ಸಮಯ 3 ಗಂಟೆ 5 ನಿಮಿಷ ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು (ಅತ್ತಿಬೆಲೆ — ದೆಂಕಣಿಕೋಟೆ — ಅಂಚೆಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾರ್ಗವಾಗಿ). ನಾನು ಈ ಮಾರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡದ್ದು ಬೊಮ್ಮಸಂದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ರಾಮೇಶ್ವರಂ ಕಫೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪಹಾರ ಮಾಡುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ.

ಹೋಗೇನಕಲ್ ತಲುಪಿದ ನಂತರ ನಾವು ದೋಣಿ ಸವಾರಿ ಮಾಡಿದೆವು (₹1500 ರಸೀದಿ + ₹500 ಟಿಪ್ಸ್).

ಇತರೆ ವೆಚ್ಚಗಳು:

• ಅರಣ್ಯ ತಪಾಸಣಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಶುಲ್ಕ — ₹50
• ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಗ್ರಾಮ/ಪಟ್ಟಣ ಪಂಚಾಯಿತಿ ಶುಲ್ಕ — ₹100
• ಹೋಟೆಲ್‌ನೊಳಗಿನ ವಾಹನ ನಿಲುಗಡೆ ಶುಲ್ಕ — ₹50

ಸುಮಾರು 90 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಯ ಕಳೆದೆವು.

ನಂತರ ನಾವು ಕಾರನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದ ಹೋಟೆಲ್‌ನಲ್ಲೇ ಊಟ (₹168) ಮಾಡಿದೆವು. ಅನ್ನ, ಸಾಂಬಾರ್, ರಸಂ, ಎರಡು ವಿಧದ ಪಲ್ಯ, ಉಪ್ಪಿನಕಾಯಿ, ಹಪ್ಪಳ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಜ್ಜಿಗೆ. ಊಟ ಬಹಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿತ್ತು. ನಮಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಹಸಿವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕಾರಣ, ಕಳೆದ ಎರಡು ದಿನಗಳಿಂದ ಉಪವಾಸ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದವರಂತೆ ತಿಂದೆವು!

ಹಿಂತಿರುಗುವ ಪ್ರಯಾಣವನ್ನು ಸಂಜೆ 4:45ಕ್ಕೆ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದೆವು. ಗೂಗಲ್ ಮ್ಯಾಪ್ಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 3 ಗಂಟೆ 45 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳು ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು (ಅಂಚೆಟ್ಟಿ — ಹುಣಸನಹಳ್ಳಿ — ಮಾರಳದೊಡ್ಡಿ — ಕಾಡು ಶಿವನಹಳ್ಳಿ — ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮಾರಳವಾಡಿ — ಹಾರೋಹಳ್ಳಿ ಮಾರ್ಗವಾಗಿ). ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಉತ್ತರಹಳ್ಳಿಗೆ ತಲುಪುವ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ಉಂಟಾಗುವ ಸಂಚಾರ ದಟ್ಟಣೆ ಇರುವ ಸಮಯದ ಟ್ರಾಫಿಕ್ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲು ನಾನು ಈ ಮಾರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡೆ.

ನಾವು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿದಂತೆ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಸುಮಾರು 8:30ಕ್ಕೆ ಮನೆ ತಲುಪಿದೆವು. ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ತುಂಬಾ ಸುಸ್ತಾಗಿದ್ದೆವು. ರಾತ್ರಿ ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿ 10 ಗಂಟೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಮಲಗಿದೆವು.

ಇಂದು ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ 8 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಉತ್ತಮ ನಿದ್ರೆಯ ನಂತರ ಎದ್ದಾಗ, ಕೇವಲ 130 ಕಿಲೋಮೀಟರ್ ದೂರದ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಗಿ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ನಾವು ಇಷ್ಟು ಸುಸ್ತಾಗಿರುವುದೇಕೆ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಬಂತು. ಈ ದೂರವನ್ನು ಕ್ರಮಿಸಲು 3 ಗಂಟೆಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಮಯ ಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದೇಕೆ?

ಇದು ವಿಚಿತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಅನಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೇ?

ಅಮೆರಿಕಾ, ಯುರೋಪ್ ಅಥವಾ ಇತರೆ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೇ ದೂರವನ್ನು ಸುಮಾರು ಒಂದು ಗಂಟೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಕ್ರಮಿಸಬಹುದಲ್ಲವೇ?

ಫ್ಲೋರಿಡಾದ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಪಟ್ಟಣದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ನನ್ನ ಸಂಬಂಧಿ ಆಗಾಗ್ಗೆ ನ್ಯೂಯಾರ್ಕ್‌ಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಅವಳು ಹೇಳುವುದೇನೆಂದರೆ, ಒಂದು ದಿಕ್ಕಿನ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಮಾರು 15 ಗಂಟೆಗಳು ಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ 5 ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಹೊರಟು ರಾತ್ರಿ 9 ಗಂಟೆಯೊಳಗೆ ತಲುಪುತ್ತಾಳೆ. (ಸುಮಾರು 1000 ಮೈಲುಗಳು ಅಥವಾ 1600 ಕಿಲೋಮೀಟರ್ ದೂರ).

ಅಷ್ಟು ದೀರ್ಘ ಪ್ರಯಾಣದ ನಂತರ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸುಸ್ತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ನಿದ್ರೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಮರುದಿನ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಚೇತರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಅವಳು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

ನಿಜ ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ, ನನಗೂ ಇಂದು ಸುಸ್ತು ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಆಯಾಸ ಇದೆ.

ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು ಮೂಡುತ್ತಿವೆ,

1. ನಾವು ಯಾವ ರೀತಿಯ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ?
2. ನಮ್ಮ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿಗಳು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಉತ್ತಮ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದವೆಯೇ? ಅವು ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಮಾನದಂಡಗಳಿಗೆ ಅನುಗುಣವಾಗಿವೆಯೇ?
3. ನಮ್ಮ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳು ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ, ಟೈರ್ ಮತ್ತು ರಸ್ತೆಯ ನಡುವೆ ಇಷ್ಟು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಘರ್ಷಣೆಯ ಶಬ್ದ ಏಕೆ ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ?
4. ರಸ್ತೆಗಳು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ ಉದಯಪುರಕ್ಕೆ (ಸುಮಾರು 1700 ಕಿಮೀ) ಒಂದೇ ದಿನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರು ಓಡಿಸಿ ತಲುಪಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಬೇಕು. ಆದರೆ ಗೂಗಲ್ ಮ್ಯಾಪ್ಸ್ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ 29 ಗಂಟೆಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಮಯ ಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಅಮೆರಿಕಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಕಾಗುವ ಸಮಯಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಸುಮಾರು ಎರಡು ಪಟ್ಟು ಹೆಚ್ಚು.
5. ನಾನು ಕೇವಲ ಅಮೆರಿಕಾವನ್ನು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಾಗಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಆಟೋಬಾನ್ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳು ಇನ್ನೂ ಉತ್ತಮವೆಂದು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೇನೆ.
6. ಭಾರತವು 2047ರೊಳಗೆ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರವಾಗಬಹುದೇ? ಅಥವಾ ಅದು ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ಕನಸೇ? ನಾನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರನ್ನೂ ದೂಷಿಸುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಆ ಗುರಿಯನ್ನು ಸಾಧಿಸಲು ನಾನು ಏನು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು? ನನ್ನ ದೇಶದ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಹೇಗೆ ಕೊಡುಗೆ ನೀಡಬಹುದು?
7. ನಾನು ಕೇವಲ ಎರಡು ದೇಶಗಳ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು ಎರಡು ಪಟ್ಟು ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವಿದೆ.
8. ನಾವು ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ, ಮೇಲ್ಸೇತುವೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಲವಾರು ಪ್ಯಾಚ್‌ಗಳು, ಮಳೆನೀರು ಹರಿಯಲು ತೋಡಿರುವ ಕಾಲುವೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ರಸ್ತೆ ಮೇಲ್ಮೈಯ ಅಸಮತೋಲನಗಳಿಂದಾಗಿ ವಾಹನ ಚಾಲನೆ ವೇಳೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಶಬ್ದ ಉಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ವೇಗವೂ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ, ಸುಗಮ ಚಾಲನೆಯ ಅನುಭವವೇ ಇಲ್ಲದಂತಾಗಿದೆ.
9. ಮಿಷಿಗನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ನನ್ನ ಸಂಬಂಧಿ ದಾವಣಗೆರೆಯಿಂದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಬಂದ ನಂತರ ಅವರ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದೆ. ಅವರು “ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿತ್ತು” ಎಂದರು. ನಂತರ “ಅಮೆರಿಕಾದಲ್ಲೂ ಇದೇ ರೀತಿಯ ಅನುಭವವೇ?” ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ, “ಇಲ್ಲ. ಎರಡೂ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿಗಳೇ ಆಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಚಾಲನೆಯ ಅನುಭವದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಯಾಣದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಂಟಾಗುವ ಆಯಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರೀ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವಿದೆ” ಎಂದರು.

ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ: ಅದು ಏಕೆ?

1. ನಾವು ಭಾರತೀಯರು ಉತ್ತಮ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಟೋಲ್ ಶುಲ್ಕವನ್ನು ಪಾವತಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಹಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಅದರ ಪ್ರತಿಫಲವಾಗಿ ಉತ್ತಮ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಏಕೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ?
2. ನಾವು ರಜೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವುದು ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ ಪಡೆಯಲೋ ಅಥವಾ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಸುಸ್ತಾಗಲೋ?
3. ಕೆಲವು ಎಕ್ಸ್‌ಪ್ರೆಸ್‌ವೇಗಳು (ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು–ಮೈಸೂರು ಮಾರ್ಗ) ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನಾನು ಒಪ್ಪುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇವಲ ಆರು ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಕ್ಕೇ ಆಯಾಸವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಆನಂದದಾಯಕವಾಗಿರಬೇಕಲ್ಲವೇ?”
