Indian Government Suspends 8 Engineers Over Dangerous Flyover Design

A new flyover in Bhopal, India, has sparked public outcry—not for its grandeur, but for its dangerous design. The Aishbagh flyover features a sharp 90-degree turn that raises major safety concerns. The project cost around 180 million rupees (±US$2.1 million) and took nearly 10 years to complete. It was meant to connect key areas to New Bhopal. After photos and videos went viral, the Madhya Pradesh government suspended seven active engineers and one retired officer from the Public Works Department (PWD). Locals criticized the flyover as a serious safety risk. Project engineers blamed limited land and a nearby metro station. Former PWD chief engineer VK Amar slammed the design as technically flawed and dangerous, recommending a curved approach with at least 100 meters of lead distance for safer driving.
