Lion and Lioness Behavior at Gir National Park

The Gir National Park has the last remaining wild species of Asiatic lion and serves as a unique chance of peeking into the interesting social lives of these grand cats. In contrast to the common popular king of the jungle, the one in Gir is a much more harmonious and peaceful life in prides.

The pride is dominated by lionesses. They tend to remain in their group of birth and they tend to develop close social ties with sisters and daughters. These are the main hunters and they combine their efforts to hunt down other animals like chital and sambar deer by using tact and accuracy. They successfully work together, which guarantees them a better success rate and a continuous food source to the pride.

The bigger and more impressive male lions are occupied primarily with territory and cub defense and attack males. They guard territories, demarcate their territories, and intervene in the case of threats. Males tend to feed first at a kill, but lionesses are in no way submissive. They may also be aggressive particularly when they are defending cubs or creating social order in the pride.

Surprisingly, the social patterns of Asiatic lions in Gir are slightly different as compared to the African counterparts. Pride sizes are smaller and in some cases the males are known to form separate coalitions which they join females in the course of mating or feeding.

After a visit to Gir, one realizes that the lion society is not only about dominance but also cooperation and communication and survival. The competition of lion and lioness is the indicator of an exquisitely balanced force and tactics, and Gir is one of the most interesting wildlife sites worldwide.
