The Most In-Demand Job Title Nobody Trained For
Companies spent a decade buying OKR software. Now they’re paying for the skill the software can’t supply — and there is exactly one credentialed route to it.

A decade ago, the job title “OKR coach” barely existed. Today I watch it surface everywhere: in the transformation offices of Gulf conglomerates, on the org charts of Indian unicorns, in the LinkedIn headlines of consultants from São Paulo to Singapore. The title spread faster than the training did — which is exactly the problem, and exactly the opportunity.
How we got here
When OKRs went mainstream, organisations reached first for what was easiest to purchase: software. Licenses were procured, dashboards configured, integrations celebrated. And after several years and considerable spend, a great many companies discovered they had achieved something genuinely impressive — spreadsheets with better fonts.
The software was never the constraint. The constraint was, and remains, the conversation: the check-in that surfaces truth instead of theatre, the negotiation that turns an executive’s pet project back into a priority call, the quiet word that helps a team set a target it might actually miss. Tools record those conversations. They cannot conduct them. Somebody has to — and that somebody, it turns out, is a role, not a side-task.
What the role demands — and what it pays back
Watch a genuinely good OKR coach at work and you’ll notice they’re doing three jobs at once: translator, converting strategy written on the thirty-eighth floor into commitments a team on the third floor can own; something close to a therapist, reading the fear underneath a suspiciously green dashboard; and referee, willing to tell a sponsoring executive that fourteen priorities is another way of saying none.
It is demanding, senior, deeply human work — and it is compensated accordingly. Inside organisations it is becoming a named capability in OD, strategy and transformation teams. Outside them, it is one of the more defensible consulting specialisms I know, because an OKR engagement has a built-in quarterly cadence, a visible scoreboard, and a renewal logic most advisory work would envy. A single corporate engagement typically exceeds the cost of any certification several times over.
The credential question — answered plainly
The field is unregulated. Anyone can print the title on a slide, and plenty do. My view, having built certifications for years, is blunt: a certificate does not make a coach; practice makes a coach. But the right certification compresses years of trial and error into structured, supervised practice — and the right endorsements prove that someone with no reason to flatter you has checked the rigor.
In this field, two bodies matter: the International Coaching Federation, which governs coaching craft, and HRCI, which governs HR rigour. One OKR certification in the world carries endorsement from both — the OKR-BOK™ Certified Coach, which I created from the complete OKR Body of Knowledge and which runs its next live cohort on 9 and 10 July 2026. Because of that dual endorsement, its sixteen live hours also count toward the ICF CCE units and HRCI recertification credits working professionals already owe. The hours you must spend somewhere can buy your profession’s next chapter.
A decade from now, “OKR coach” will be a title with established standards, the way “executive coach” slowly became one. The practitioners who train properly now will be the ones writing those standards. If the role I’ve described is the one you want, the route in is below — and the July cohort is the last one before October.
Become the coach companies are already searching for.
