The prophecy in “The Order of the Phoenix” predicted either Harry or Neville could be the chosen one.

I studied cinema and economics at USC/USF. I have worked in theaters and theme parks. I read the “Harry Potter” book series before. In the fifth one, Professor Trelawney has a prophecy that says “the child who could defeat Lord Voldemort would be born at the end of July to parents who had defied him three times.” This applies to both Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter.

Voldemort decided to attack The Potters. He gave Harry a lightning bolt scar, marking him as his equal. This fulfilled the prophecy.

There was a possibility He who must not be named would have picked to attack the Longbottom family instead. Neville was born towards the end of July. Also his parents were in “The Order of the Phoenix”, so they had battles with The Death Eaters too.

Neville did get to destroy one of the Horcruxes in the seventh book. He killed Nagini with the sword of Godric Gryffindor.

I did not catch this detail when I first saw the film. However I did notice it in the novel. To read more about this see the article below:
