Every Day is a New Beginning

Baptism is a beautiful picture of new life in Christ, but God’s mercy reminds us that every new day is another opportunity to walk closely with Him.

This Sunday at church, we started a new sermon series centered around water throughout the Bible. While our senior pastor is currently on an eight-week sabbatical, members of our pastoral staff have been preaching during his absence. Over the next several weeks, each message will explore a different biblical event involving water, and this week’s message focused on the meaning and significance of baptism.

Although I gave my life to Christ when I was fourteen years old and was baptized shortly afterward, I still found myself taking pages of notes. It was a wonderful reminder that no matter how familiar we think we are with a passage of Scripture or a Biblical doctrine, God can always teach us something new when we approach His Word with an open heart.

The Meaning of Baptism

One of the points that stood out to me most was the distinction between salvation and baptism. In our Assemblies of God church, we believe that salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. When we confess our sins, believe in Him, and receive Him as our Lord and Savior, we are made right with God. Baptism does not save us; rather, it is an outward declaration of the inward transformation that has already taken place.

Romans 10:9–10 explains this beautifully:

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” (Romans 10:9–10, NIV)

Our pastor also walked us through Jesus’ own baptism in Matthew 3:13–17, answered questions about why different Christian denominations practice baptism differently, and introduced a new word to me: salvific, meaning something necessary for salvation. It was a thoughtful and biblical explanation that deepened my appreciation for why baptism is such an important step of obedience for every believer.

One statement from the message especially stayed with me: Baptism is a sign of our trust in Jesus’ grace, our death to ourselves, and our hope in new life. It identifies us with Christ and with His Church. That simple truth captures the beauty of what baptism represents.

A Reminder That God is Still Moving

The message carried even more meaning because just last night we had gathered for a worship service at church, during which nine people were baptized. It was a beautiful celebration as people of all ages publicly declared their faith in Christ. Among those being baptized were teenagers, preteens, and even someone in their eighties. Watching each person step into the water reminded me that it is never too early — or too late — to follow Jesus in obedience.

In previous worship nights, we’ve seen twenty or even thirty people baptized in a single evening. It has been incredible to witness how God continues to move within our church and throughout our community. Every baptism tells a story of redemption, grace, and a life being made new through Christ.

God’s Mercies are New Every Morning

As I reflected on the message, I realized that baptism also reminded me of something we experience every single day: a new beginning.

We don’t need to be saved over and over again, but every morning God offers fresh mercy and fresh grace. Yesterday’s failures do not have to define today’s decisions. Last week’s disappointments don’t have to determine this week’s direction. Whatever has happened in the past, God invites us to continue moving forward with Him.

Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us:

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22–23, NIV)

I’ve noticed that when difficult circumstances arise, it’s easy for me to become discouraged or even feel stuck. Sometimes I can spend so much time focusing on the problem that I stop moving forward in the direction God is leading me. Yet the Lord continually reminds me that while we shouldn’t ignore reality, we also shouldn’t allow our circumstances to become greater than our faith.

Instead, we can honestly bring every concern before God, trust Him with what we cannot control, and continue taking the next faithful step. He is still working, even when we don’t see the outcome immediately. His plans for our lives have not changed simply because we are walking through a difficult season.

Today, if you’re feeling weighed down by mistakes, disappointments, or uncertainty, remember that God specializes in new beginnings. He hasn’t given up on you, and His invitation to walk closely with Him is just as real today as it has always been. His grace is sufficient, His mercy is new, and His faithfulness never fails.
