What Is A DNO Application?

They will then calculate and monitor the amount of electricity needed in order to accurately bill you at the end of each billing period. What Does DNO Stand For?

DNO stands for Distribution Network Operator and is the company who owns and manages the electricity metres and lines inside your property that deliver energy from the National Grid to your home or business. There are 14 different distribution network operators (DNOs) in England, Wales and Scotland, owned by 6 groups:

• Electricity North West Limited (ENWL)
• Northern PowerGrid
• Scottish and Southern Energy (SEE)
• ScottishPower Energy Networks (SPEN)
• UK Power Networks (UKPN)
• Western Power Distribution (WPD)

When Do You Need To Apply For A DNO Application?

Unfortunately, everyone needs to apply for DNO permission to ensure supply in your local area is efficient and the installation of the below is compliant with grid regulations in your area. If you are installing any of the following devices, you must notify your local DNO provider:

• Solar (PV) Panels
• Heat pump
• EV Charging Point
• Battery Storage

Another reason as to why it’s so important to apply for your DNO certification is to ensure you are receiving SEG payments from the National Grid, as this won’t be possible if you do not gain that approval.

How Long Does A DNO Application Take?

Due to an increase in demand for Solar Panels and other home grown energy devices, waiting periods have increased. These applications can vary between 2–6 months.
