BYD has quietly become one of the most capable V2L platforms in the European market — and almost nobody is talking about it.

While most V2L guides focus on Hyundai and Kia, the BYD Atto 3 and Seal (EU spec) both support Vehicle-to-Load discharge through the Type 2 charging port. Same protocol. Same adapter type. And in many cases, the same real-world output as an IONIQ 5.

Here’s what you need to know to actually use it.

Important: BYD Han and Tang V2L references you may see online apply to China-domestic spec vehicles with GB/T connectors — not the same as EU-spec models.

How BYD V2L Works

BYD EU-spec vehicles use the same CP-pin signal method as E-GMP vehicles (Hyundai/Kia/Genesis).

1. A V2L adapter with a 2,000Ω resistor on the Control Pilot (CP) pin is inserted into the Type 2 charging port
2. The vehicle reads the resistance and interprets it as a discharge request — not a charge request
3. The bidirectional onboard charger converts DC battery power to AC
4. AC power flows out through the adapter’s output socket

Key difference from E-GMP: BYD EU-spec vehicles do not have a dedicated exterior V2L socket. All V2L output goes through the main charging port. You need the CP-trigger adapter every session.

Step-by-Step: First V2L Session

1. Park, no charging cable connected
2. Open charging port flap
3. Insert V2L adapter — push until Type 2 latch clicks
4. Switch ON the adapter (LED confirms active discharge)
