The Marriage That Never Ended and Never Truly Existed

Not all unhappy marriages end. Some just… continue.

Marriage is one of the biggest changes that happen in a person’s life after leaving the womb.

It is not supposed to be a happy ending for a relationship, nor is it meant to be just a commitment to building a family and living in peace. It often becomes a battle – between two humans, their families, and the children they brought into the world.

It usually starts one of three ways:

  • Falling in love, saying yes, and getting married.
  • • Falling in love, getting heartbroken, eventually finding someone else, and getting married.
  • • Never falling in love at all – just an arranged marriage.

Yes, the majority of people get married eventually, regardless of whether they truly believe in marriage or not.

But the real question is – do they stay happy afterwards?

The Numbers Look Fine. The Reality Doesn’t.

The good news is that 79% of people reportedly stay happy throughout their lives with their partner. The other 21% separate and, in many cases, find happiness elsewhere.

But here’s what the numbers don’t show.

Some people stay married until death without ever being truly happy. Not because they loved that person deeply or felt committed to the marriage – but because they lacked the courage to leave. Maybe they lacked a convincing reason. Maybe they had children who couldn’t imagine life without both parents under one roof. So they stayed.

They risked their happiness. Compromised what little they had left. Stopped living for themselves and started living for their kids or their circumstances.

For them, marriage is a deal that never contained satisfaction, happiness, or growth. What exists instead is silent tears, suffocation, patience, and one more reason to stay a little longer.

The Hollow Marriages Google Will Never Count

No matter how many times you search, Google will never show you the percentage of hollow marriages – the ones that never truly existed and never truly ended. They live in the in-between. Everything about them can be witnessed except the happiness.

These couples never shared anything real – just a home, a bed, and maybe some kids.

And those kids? They carry it. Mentally disturbed, emotionally confused, growing up in silent or chaotic houses – soaked pillow covers, empty cigarette packs, a tension they could feel but never name. They spend years wondering why their parents stayed together when they clearly weren’t meant to be. Some never get an answer. Some get one that’s too hard to swallow.

A Baby Was Never a Bandage

Kids save marriages – that’s what people say.

But a broken, hollow marriage was never healed by a baby. All a baby produced in those cases was a reason to stay. A reason to make an unhappy marriage stretch a little longer, with a little more weight on it.

So What’s the Answer?

Divorce is not an easy solution – I’ll be the first to agree with that. Making your children’s lives uncertain is a heavy price. But how does an unhealthy bond protect their future?

There is no clean answer here. Just an honest question worth sitting with.

The Ones Who Never Admit It

A wrong yes is an unending suffering – and that’s not an exaggeration.

Because out of that 79% who are counted as “happily married,” a significant number will never admit they chose wrong. They suffer quietly, sometimes knowingly, sometimes so numb they can’t even identify what they lost. They suffer until they die.

I believe in marriage. I genuinely do.

But I will always believe more in staying with the person you can die peacefully beside.

You’ve heard it said: till death do us part.

“Marriage without love can still be a happy marriage – but marriage without peace is a cage that only opens when one of you dies.”
