What a Wrong Number Taught Me
Sometimes the cheapest thing we can offer is also the most valuable.
“Hello, Sirrrrr!
We have a special overdraft loan offer for you. Since you’re a doctor, you’re eligible for up to ₹50 lakhs!”
Exactly what I needed to hear first thing in the morning.
Especially when my own net worth had taken a temporary nosedive thanks to unemployment.
For a brief second, I almost felt rich again.
Then I laughed.
“No, thank you,” I said, and ended the call.
Years ago, that conversation would have gone very differently.
“Please stop calling me.”
“Why would I need an overdraft?”
“Who asked for this?”
The poor person on the other end would probably have reached for a headache tablet — or at least a glass of cold water.
Today, most callers simply smile through the phone and reply, “No problem, ma’am. Have a nice day.”
So what changed?
Earlier, I was all ego.

Now, I hope I’m a little more human.
The real lesson didn’t come from the bank. It came from watching my husband.
Every phone call — whether it was from his boss, a delivery executive, a customer care representative, or someone selling something he had no interest in — received exactly the same response.
The same calm voice.
The same patience.
The same respect.
One day I asked him, “How do you stay so composed?”
His answer stayed with me.
“The person on the other side is probably just doing their job. We don’t have to buy what they’re selling. But we don’t have to make their day worse either.”
Such a simple thought.
It costs nothing to say, “No, thank you.”
It costs nothing to be civil.
Yet for the person hearing it after a hundred rejections, it may mean more than we realize.
That day, my ego quietly left the room.
Humility walked in.
And politeness — something I had always mistaken for mere good manners turned out to be a quiet form of kindness.
Sometimes the cheapest thing we can give another human being is also the most valuable.
Thanks for reading.
