Europe Installed Record Battery Storage Capacity in 2025

Europe installed record volumes of battery energy storage systems in 2025, confirming that storage is moving from a supporting technology to a core pillar of the energy transition.

According to SolarPower Europe’s European Battery Market Outlook 2026–2030, Europe added 36 GWh of new battery storage capacity in 2025. This marked the 12th consecutive year of growth and pushed Europe’s total operational battery fleet above 100 GWh for the first time.

Germany remained the largest market, accounting for 18% of new installations — roughly 6.5 GWh. The United Kingdom and Italy followed with 14% each, or around 5 GWh per country.

The market grew by 48% year-on-year, recovering from slower growth in 2024. More importantly, the structure of the market changed: utility-scale battery systems became the dominant growth driver for the first time, accounting for more than half of new installations.

This shift reflects three major trends across Europe:

  1. rising demand for flexibility in power systems with high shares of solar and wind;
  2. stronger investment cases for batteries, supported by multiple revenue streams;
  3. rapid growth in hybrid renewable projects, especially solar-plus-storage.

For comparison, China commissioned 66.43 GW / 189.48 GWh of new-type energy storage capacity in 2025, excluding pumped hydro. In energy-capacity terms, this was more than five times Europe’s additions. The United States added around 58 GWh of battery storage in 2025.

The distinction between GW and GWh matters. GW measures how much power a storage system can deliver at a given moment, while GWh measures how much electricity it can store. For grid stability, both are important: power capacity supports fast response, while energy capacity determines how long batteries can supply electricity.

SolarPower Europe expects the European market to continue expanding. Annual installations are projected to exceed 50 GWh in 2026 and reach 138 GWh by 2030, almost four times the 2025 level. Within the EU-27, total battery storage capacity is expected to grow more than sixfold to around 470 GWh by the end of the decade.

However, this would still fall short of the roughly 600 GWh modelled by SolarPower Europe as necessary to support the EU’s energy security, competitiveness and decarbonisation objectives.

The association is therefore calling for a dedicated EU Battery Storage Action Plan. Such a plan should focus on faster permitting, easier grid access, non-discriminatory participation in electricity markets, fair valuation of flexibility services, and more stable investment conditions.

A further challenge is Europe’s dependence on imported batteries and components. Recent analysis by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre suggests that the EU may cover only around 21.4% of its battery demand by 2030 under current conditions.

This means Europe’s storage boom is real — but so is the industrial challenge behind it. Battery storage is becoming essential for integrating renewables, reducing curtailment, improving grid resilience and strengthening energy security. Yet without faster deployment, better market rules and a stronger European supply chain, the continent risks building the flexibility backbone of its energy transition on imported technology.
