Tragic Hit-and-Run Claims Life of UNR Sorority Member; Suspected Drunk Driver Flees Scene
RENO, Nev. — A devastating hit-and-run incident late Monday night has left the University of Nevada, Reno community reeling. A young woman, a pedestrian and member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking in the area. The driver, believed to be a pledge with the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, fled the scene and remains unidentified.
Police and first responders were called to the collision site at approximately 9:23 p.m. on September 22. According to preliminary reports, the driver showed clear signs of intoxication and was visibly impaired before striking the pedestrian and speeding away. The victim, a UNR student, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Family and close friends confirmed she was pronounced dead in the early hours of September 24.
The Reno Police Department is actively investigating, but details remain limited. Authorities are pursuing leads related to the suspect’s affiliation with TKE and are reviewing surveillance footage from the area. Witnesses reported the vehicle was driving erratically prior to the incident, raising concerns about impaired driving.
The tragedy has shaken UNR’s Greek life community, where the victim was a beloved member of Tri Delta, a sorority known for its strong sisterhood and commitment to leadership. TKE, the fraternity linked to the suspect, has faced scrutiny in the past for conduct violations, though it has worked to rebuild its reputation in recent years.
UNR President Brian Sandoval addressed the loss in a statement today, saying, “This heartbreaking incident has left our Wolf Pack family grieving. We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones and are committed to supporting our students through this difficult time.”
A candlelight vigil is scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m. on the quad near the Joe Crowley Student Union to honor the young woman’s life. Students, faculty, and community members are invited to attend with candles or battery-operated lights to share memories and find solace together. Counseling services are available through the Dean of Students office.
As the investigation continues, the community seeks answers and justice. Reno police are asking anyone with information to contact their tip line at (775) 321-ROCK. The university and its students now face the challenge of healing while confronting the dangers of impaired driving and ensuring safer streets for all.
