The Eternal Code: Part 1
Part I: The Discovery
Simone Harlow adjusted her glasses, her fingers brushing against the synthetic frames, wondering if they’d give her away. She’d spent weeks in her fabricated identity, piecing together a paper trail for her alias: a low-level “Operations Assistant” in the Orgone Foundation. She was on edge, every breath a gamble. Even now, as she typed innocuous emails about “personnel rescheduling,” she felt the weight of the Foundation’s surveillance all around her.
The Orgone Foundation was no ordinary research institution. From whispers on the dark web to conspiracy-laden forums, it had a reputation for harbouring the unknown. Its researchers, they said, were on the verge of cracking “the code” — a supposed sequence hidden in human DNA that could change the future of human life. There was more, Simone knew, but the details were as opaque as the encrypted servers she’d tried to penetrate. In the meantime, she watched and listened, letting pieces of information fall into place.

Today, the breakthrough came with the shift change. Three scientists she’d seen only from afar had gathered in the lab, speaking in hushed tones, their voices muffled by masks and cautious glances around. Dr. Linnea Rahman, head of Molecular Systems; Dr. Etienne Callum, a leading neuroscientist; and Dr. Joana Ishikawa, an expert in epigenetics. Simone, tucked away in the shadows by a stack of servers, strained to hear their conversation.
“It’s happening sooner than we anticipated,” Linnea was saying, her eyes wide with a mixture of excitement and dread. “The HERV sequences are stirring… the viral code, as though it’s woken up.”
Simone’s pulse quickened. She’d heard of HERVs, those fragments of ancient viruses embedded in human DNA, relics of a biological past when viruses wove themselves into human genes. But the idea that these fragments could simply “wake up” was as new to her as it was electrifying.
Etienne was visibly sceptical, his brow furrowed. “You really think a sequence locked in for thousands of years could just… start functioning again? Just like that?”
Joana, looking far more serene than her colleagues, nodded. “I’ve been saying for years that it’s more than random junk. This code is like a time capsule. It’s almost as if it’s waiting for the right conditions — cosmic radiation, seismic shifts, environmental pressure. And it’s showing up in our candidates now.”
Simone held her breath. She’d heard rumours of candidates selected by Orgone, but until now, hadn’t confirmed their existence. These candidates, she knew, were part of something called “The Clockwork Protocol,” though no one outside the Foundation seemed to understand what it involved. Simone bit her lip, torn between the need to stay hidden and the overwhelming urge to learn more.
As the three scientists left the lab, Simone risked stepping out from her hiding place. She moved swiftly, her fingers gliding over the digital keypad as she accessed the workstation they’d just vacated. Her hands shook as she opened the recent files. The screen glowed with data — an encrypted folder marked with only one identifier: Clockwork Candidates.
Simone’s fingers danced over the keys, opening the folder. Her eyes scanned through a list of profiles, her pulse quickening as names and genetic sequences filled the screen:
- Liam Chen
- Sofia Andrade
- Zane Rosenthal
- Aisha Okoye
- Decker Holt
Five people. Five individuals with genetic markers so unique that they’d been pulled into a programme as hidden as the Foundation itself. But why? The screen flickered with genetic sequences Simone couldn’t fully comprehend, a web of codes that seemed almost alive in their complexity. But one line caught her eye — a note in Linnea’s careful hand: Activation Imminent. Candidates are prepared for full Resonance.
Just then, the lights flickered overhead, and the room was bathed in a soft blue glow. The hum of the computers shifted in frequency, a low hum that seemed to vibrate in her chest. Simone glanced around, her instincts on high alert. She knew she had little time.
Footsteps echoed down the hall, heavy and unhurried, like the pace of someone with authority. Simone shut down the screen and ducked into a shadowed corner, willing herself to disappear. She pressed herself against the wall as the footsteps approached. Two voices now — one calm, the other slightly raised, with a hint of irritation.
“What are you saying, Etienne?” a voice asked, deep and authoritative. “That we’re to stop the activation?”
Etienne. The neuroscientist’s voice was tired, drained. “We have no idea what we’re unlocking, Linnea. What if this isn’t meant to be?”
Linnea sighed, her silhouette passing through the frosted glass of the lab door. “These candidates were chosen because they have the code, Etienne. Whatever we are, we have been before. And perhaps what we fear to awaken is our only way forward.”
Simone’s heart hammered as they moved on, their voices fading into the distance. She slipped back to her station, hands cold but steady. She’d just discovered something that could shake humanity’s understanding of itself: a code within human DNA, lying dormant for millennia, waiting to awaken. And soon, it would.
But would humanity be ready?
