New Shortcuts Actions Coming In OS 27

Apple just announced their upcoming OS version 27 with a lot of AI-related features that were supposed to be added to the current version 26. These new AI-related features look great, but I am not really much into that. Don’t get me wrong, if it makes using the device more convenient, then I am all for it.

Speaking of convenience, one of my favorite apps is the Shortcuts app. I have written a number of shortcuts that made repetitive tasks easier to execute. This coming OS 27, Apple will add new features, which I am excited about. Let’s talk about it.

New Shortcuts Automation

I have more than half a dozen automations on Shortcuts. This coming OS 27, three new automation triggers will be added: Screenshot, Keyboard and Notifications. The Keyboard gets activated when a keyboard is connected to or disconnected from the device. At this point, I do not see any use for this specific trigger.

The Screenshot automation gets triggered, you guessed it, when a screenshot is taken. This trigger has a lot of potential, especially with the new AI features that process images.

The Notification automation is what I am looking forward to. I have a Pushcut app that sends notifications to my iPhone, and with this trigger, I can automatically launch different shortcuts.

Troubleshooting Cloud Models

The current Use Cloud Models action on Shortcuts does not allow you to inspect what data is being seen by the model, which makes debugging difficult. The new OS 27 Shortcuts exposes a new parameter, Transcript, which allows you to inspect the data the model is working on. Finally! Better debugging tools.

New Storage Action

Did Apple just sherlock another third-party app? LOL. Anyway, Apple took so long to add this as a basic action. Now Shortcuts can store data locally or globally. The data is even synced via iCloud, which makes the stored data accessible across all devices. This makes Shortcuts even more powerful, and what makes it better is that you can use any type of data, it is not restricted to text and numbers only.

Vibe-coding Shortcuts

Now here comes the clincher, yes, Apple provides this feature that allows you to describe the shortcut and Apple Intelligence will attempt to generate the shortcut routine for you. This makes Shortcuts more accessible to more users. I cannot wait to test this.

September 2026 cannot come fast enough so I can access all these new Shortcuts actions.
