The Ridikkulus Cure for the Horrible Boss Syndrome

A few days ago, I met an old friend after what felt like a century and a half. You know those reunions where you expect the conversation to be all nostalgia, bad haircuts, and “remember that guy who…”. But instead the first thing he says is:

“Bro, my boss is tormenting me. Like… medieval torture, but with emails.”

Turns out his manager had mastered a very specific style of corporate cruelty: the You’re-so-dumb-hahaha leadership philosophy. Zero productivity. Zero respect. Pure chaos. A one-man weather system of mood swings. Every day at work had become a new form of mental whiplash.

My friend had reached the point where the stress wasn’t just in the mind anymore; he was getting anxiety attacks, headaches, and the constant feeling that his brain had turned into Windows 98.

Of course, at this point he was wondering if quitting was the only answer.

And that’s when I remembered my phase like this — years back — when work stress felt like dementors sucking the joy out of my soul. Back then, one of my friends, Dr. Kalpana, gave me a piece of advice so strange, so childish, and so unexpectedly effective that I still use it today.

She said:

“Remember the Boggart lesson from Harry Potter?”

Ah yes. Prisoner of Azkaban. Professor Lupin. Terrifying creature that turns into your deepest fear. And the cure?

The “Ridikkulus” spell. Turn the scary thing into something so silly, so absurd, that you can’t help but laugh.

Dr. Kalpana told me to do exactly that… with my boss.

And because I was desperate and half-deranged, I did.

I turned him into a ridiculous cartoon character. A dancing turnip in a suit. A tiny angry squirrel with a laptop. A villain whose evil power was… losing his own PowerPoint files.

Whatever made me laugh, I used it.

And that one childish trick did what 500 self-help threads could not: It gave me my power back.

🌪 Back to my friend

So I told him the same thing:

“Make a funny caricature of your boss. Draw it, imagine it, whatever. Just… boggart him.”

He didn’t just take the advice. He committed to the assignment. He turned his boss into something so absurdly hilarious that whenever he got yelled at, his mind auto-played the cartoon version and suddenly the insults lost their sting.

A few days later, he texted me:

“Bro… it works. I’m actually laughing during meetings. This is insane.”

He’s not “cured” magically. But he’s lighter. Calmer. More in control. Because humor didn’t fix his situation; it fixed his relationship to the situation.

✨ The Insight We Keep Forgetting

As adults, we’re told to “be serious,” “be professional,” “grow up.”

But sometimes growing up makes us forget the tools that once protected our sanity:

  • Turning monsters into jokes
  • Laughing at our fears
  • Using imagination as armour
  • Giving ourselves permission to not take everything so heavily

Childhood coping mechanisms weren’t stupid. They were brilliant.

We just abandoned them because adulthood convinced us everything must be hard, logical, and dignified.

But maybe the truth is simple:

Sometimes the answer to overwhelming adult problems is the kind of silly magic you believed in when you were thirteen.

Because fear shrinks when you laugh at it. Powerless people feel powerful again. And horrible bosses… become dancing turnips for a while.

And honestly? That’s sometimes all you need to breathe again.
