But history — and human psychology — tells a different story. Authoritarian drift rarely starts with tanks in the streets. It starts when everyday people decide to look the other way.

Why We Stay Quiet

That dead silence in the video is exactly how authoritarianism takes root:

• The ‘Thank God It’s Not Me’ Reflex: The silence in that room is raw self-preservation. When authority singles someone out unfairly, the group’s immediate, quiet reaction is just relief that they aren’t the ones in the crosshairs.
• The Pretense of Authority: We are conditioned to assume the person in charge must have a valid reason, even when we can plainly see it’s bullshit. Authoritarian regimes weaponize this exact illusion of ‘law and order’ to paralyze opposition.
• Permission by Silence: By sitting there quietly, the class effectively hands the teacher permission to act like a dictator. Every time we refuse to call out a small injustice, we move the goalposts for what we’ll swallow next.

The hardest part about resisting authoritarian drift isn’t spotting the bad actors. It’s fighting our own biological instinct to lay low. The classroom experiment makes it painfully clear: silence is complicity.

It’s easy to sit back and judge the students in this video, but openly defying authority carries real, tangible risk.
