Kenya Isn’t Just Banning a Militant Group. It’s Targeting the Hate that Fuels Them.

But here’s the connection that we, especially those of us who care about workers and communities, need to understand. The Muslim Brotherhood’s ideology, born decades ago, provides the playbook. It’s the politicized religious talk that twists faith into a weapon, convincing young men that blowing up a bus or a market is holy work. Al-Shabaaf is the brutal, local franchise using that same playbook here in East Africa. I remember reading a UN report that stuck with me. It described how Al-Shabaab operatives force local shop owners in border towns to pay “taxes.” If they refuse, their shops are burned. That’s not just terrorism; it’s an attack on the right to earn a living. It’s a direct assault on workers. This method of building a shadow economy by intimidating everyday people is a page right out of the Brotherhood’s old strategy.

And who pays the highest price? Our youth. A Somali research group called Hiraal Institute found that thousands of Al-Shabaab fighters are young Kenyans, lured away from their families and futures by a warped sense of purpose. They are sold a lie, packaged in religious terms, and the result is a generation lost. That’s a national tragedy that goes far beyond any single attack.

By making this link, Kenya is doing something brave. It’s saying, “We see the whole picture.” This isn’t just Kenya’s fight. It aligns with what countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia have been saying for years. It’s a stand for the idea that true security means stopping the ideas before they stop us.
