My GSSoC’24 Journey: From Novice to Expert Contributor

GirlScript Summer of Code 2024

Participating in GSSoC’24 has been an incredible journey of learning , collaboration , and contribution . I contributed to multiple open-source projects on GitHub, adding features , fixing bugs , enhancing user experience , and improving authentication systems . In this article, I’ll walk you through my contributions , the projects I worked on , the impact of these contributions , and the achievements I earned along the way .

During GSSoC’24, I contributed to a total of 96 repositories, earning a 13th rank among contributors from over 15 countries . This achievement was recognized with a shoutout on socials, exclusive GSSoC swag, a T-shirt , and a Certificate of Appreciation .

In GSSoC’24, my journey as a contributor began in May, where I started by mastering the project rules and documentation. As I progressed, I honed my skills across various repositories, moving from basic contributions to advanced implementations. My growth spanned both frontend and backend development, culminating in the integration of advanced functionalities like Firebase authentication. Each step of the way, I embraced new challenges, evolving from a novice contributor to a skilled developer.

Initial Contributions (May — June)

• Documentation & Basic Fixes: Started by familiarizing myself with the rules and guidelines of different projects. I contributed by updating README files, fixing minor bugs, and enhancing the overall structure of project documentation.
• Styling & UI Adjustments: Focused on making small yet impactful changes to the user interface, such as fixing styling issues and enhancing navigation bars to improve user experience.

Skill Development (June — July)

• Frontend Enhancements: Moved on to more intricate frontend tasks like enhancing login pages, updating social media icons, and creating FAQ sections to improve user interaction and usability.
• Backend Contributions: Began learning and implementing various authentication methods, integrating them into projects to provide secure and efficient user authentication processes.

Advanced Contributions (July — August)

• Firebase Authentication: Integrated Firebase for authentication across multiple projects, including handling Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Microsoft logins, thereby enhancing security and user convenience.
• Multilingual Support: Implemented multi-language facilities in key projects, ensuring broader accessibility and usability for diverse user bases.
• Chatbot Integration: Developed and integrated chatbots to improve user engagement and support, significantly enhancing the interactivity of several projects.

My contributions enhanced project functionality and user experience, enriching the open-source community. With 3355 points and a 13th place ranking, I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow through diverse projects and collaborative efforts.

Additionally, I earned the Postman Student Expert certification under GSSoC’24’s Project Mangaer guidance and received Postman swags, including a t-shirt and stickers, in their giveaway.
