The rain-slicked stone of St. Jude’s collapsed inward, a dark hollow of rot beneath forgotten Gothic arches.

Detective Vance stepped over the shattered remains of the heavy oak doors, his flashlight beam cutting through stagnant dust. Four bodies lay clustered symmetrically around a ruined altar pool, each bearing two precise, bloodless puncture wounds.

Vance didn’t pull his service weapon when a tall, immaculate silhouette emerged from the deep shadow of the transept. Julian Cross adjusted his velvet cuffs, his amber eyes catching the pale moonlight filtering through fractured stained glass.

You’re late, Detective,” Cross murmured, his effortless baritone carrying easily through the ruined church.

Vance ignored the greeting, his beam tracking the victims’ scattered gear: hand-carved wooden stakes, heavy silver crucifixes, and leather-bound notebooks filled with handwritten Latin prayers.

Fanatical minds rarely survive their own convictions,” Cross said, glancing down at the debris.

You knew them?” Vance asked.

Unfortunately.” Cross offered a faint, melancholy smile. “They finally found what they spent decades looking for.

Vance shifted his weight, adjusting his leather trench coat against the damp night air. As he moved, a thin shaft of early morning sunlight slipped through a gap in the broken roof and touched his exposed wrist. A sharp circle of heat flared instantly against his pale skin.

He flinched, pulling his sleeve down as his heart hammered against his ribs.

Cross didn’t lunge. He simply looked at the reddening skin for a long, quiet moment. Then his lips curved into a slow, knowing smile.

Interesting,” Cross whispered, disappearing into the darkness beneath the broken arch.

The hunter had become the hunted.
