TAGBASE Reaches Major Milestone: Support for the NXP NTAG 223 DNA

Today is a remarkable day for us at TAGBASE. We have reached a technical milestone that significantly strengthens both our product capabilities and our economic efficiency.

Our CTO and Co-Founder, Mario Uher, has achieved a major breakthrough: TAGBASE technology now fully supports not only the NXP NTAG 424 DNA, but also the NXP NTAG 223 DNA. This accomplishment allows us to expand our hardware options without compromising on security, performance, or reliability.

Why This Matters

The NTAG 223 DNA includes the essential security features we need for dynamic, unclonable NFC authentication. Until now, we relied primarily on the NTAG 424 DNA. While a powerful and secure chip, it comes at a higher cost. The NTAG 223 DNA, by contrast, provides the same fundamental security elements at a significantly lower price.

The result is substantial. By integrating the NTAG 223 DNA into our system, we can reduce our component cost by more than 50 percent. This step gives us tremendous advantages for scaling, onboarding new customers, and offering competitive pricing without sacrificing security or quality.

About the Chips

Both chips belong to NXP’s DNA series. They are designed for secure authentication, including cryptographic protection, dynamic data operations, and robust anti-cloning mechanisms. These capabilities are crucial for TAGBASE, as we create dynamic, tamper-proof digital identities for physical products.

The NTAG 424 DNA offers an extended set of features, while the NTAG 223 DNA focuses on core security functions. For our authentication logic, these core features are exactly what we need. This makes the NTAG 223 DNA an ideal and cost-efficient alternative that aligns perfectly with our technical requirements.

A Turning Point for TAGBASE

This milestone resolves several questions we had regarding scalability, supply chain flexibility, and future cost planning. It represents a major step toward our long-term vision: making high-security authentication accessible to as many brands as possible.

By cutting the hardware cost in half while maintaining the required security level, we significantly increase our market competitiveness and create additional value for our customers.
