How I Understand the UX Design Process as a Beginner

Breaking down how I move from problem to solution while learning UI/UX design.

When I first started learning UI/UX design I thought the process was simple: open Figma and start designing screens.

But I soon realized that good design doesn’t start with screens, but it actually starts with understanding the problem.

As a beginner my process is still changing with everyday design project but having a structural understanding has helped me move from random designs to more intentional ones.

This is how I currently approach the UX design process.

Understanding the Problem

Before designing anything I try to think about :

• What is the goal of the product?
• Who is the user?
• What problem are we solving?

For my personal projects this step has helped me design with a sense of direction in my mind.

Basic Research & Observation

As I am still a beginner I don’t always conduct full user interviews yet but I do:

• Look at similar products
• Study how they show the information
• Identify what works and what feels confusing by talking to my friends

This helps me build initial thinking process.

Defining Structure (Wireframing)

Before focusing on visuals I wireframe:

• Layout
• Content placement
• Navigation flow

This step helps me think about usability before aesthetics.

Designing the Interface (UI)

Only after the structure is clear I move to UI design:

• Typography
• Color system
• Spacing
• Visual hierarchy

This is where everything starts to come together visually.

Thinking About Usability

While designing I ask:

• Is this easy to scan?
• Is the hierarchy clear?
• Can a user complete their task quickly?

This keeps the focus on the user not just the design.

Iteration

Once a design is ready I revisit it and ask the following:

• What feels cluttered?
• What can be simplified?
• What would confuse a first-time user?

Personally I feel like iteration is where most improvement happens.

What I’ve Realized So Far

The biggest shift for me has been that design is not about making things look good it’s all about making things work well s the user can have a good and satisfied experince.

As I continue learning I know this process might change but building it early has already changed how I approach every project.
