The Keepsake I Never Knew I Was Carrying
The most precious things we keep are often the moments we never thought to save.

This past week, I got a list of words in my prompts for Sparkle City Magic, and I thought I would pick one.
Rather, a word selected me.
Keepsake.
I smiled when I read it because I knew what was in my heart, and the most important keepsake is one that I cannot hold.
It's a conversation.
Not a strange one!
It was not the final encounter with someone I loved.
It was just an ordinary afternoon, but it wouldn't remain ordinary.
I can't recall what I wore. The date is unknown. I couldn't even say anything about the weather.
I do remember the laughter, though.
The kind that doesn't come with a warning, stays for just a few seconds, and then goes away before anyone realizes it has become a memory.
I believed that there was a life waiting for me somewhere else.
I felt that the significant moments would reveal themselves through celebrations, achievements, or extraordinary events of change.
I was wrong.
I was so preoccupied with looking ahead that the important moments were quietly happening.
A common pot of tea.
A voice calling my name from another room.
A question that might come to mind: "Have you eaten yet?"
I answered without thinking that those moments would last forever.
Years later, those ordinary sentences became priceless.
It's an odd way of remembering things.
Memory doesn't remember the big events in fine detail.
It catches fleeting moments—a creak of a door, the scent of rain coming through an open window, and a familiar laugh—that can't be captured in a photograph.
So perhaps that is the reason I like writing.
All these stories are an effort to save something from oblivion.
Sometimes it's a place or a moment in time.
Sometimes it's a person.
Sometimes it's just the version of ourselves who once thought that things would remain the same.
This week's prompt brought to mind that maybe all writers are collectors of keepsakes.
Many collect them in journals.
There are numerous ways to hide them, but one is in poems.
Some place them between the paragraphs of stories, hoping another stranger sees a bit of their own life there.
Maybe this is the quiet enchantment of this community.
One word travels from one writer to another, becoming hundreds of different memories, yet somehow, we are all united by it.
So today, this keepsake won't be an object.
Instead, it is a reminder that every ordinary day becomes special after it has passed.
Maybe that's all.
What ordinary moment has become a special part of your life, a treasure you never knew you would keep?
