In earlier field guides, we looked at the metabolic, auditory, and pheromonal systems. Now, for the “Upper Class” of Queen Anne, let’s focus on the lungs and diaphragm.

  • The Biological Failure: In Seattle’s undead, the autonomic nervous system no longer controls regular breathing. Now, “breathing” just happens as a side effect of movement.
  • The Altitude Wall: As you climb the steep slope of Queen Anne Ave N, even a small drop in barometric pressure can make the rotted, stiff lung tissue of the undead collapse from the effort.
  • Pressure Differential: Since the undead can’t balance the pressure in their chests, they run out of the air needed to use their vocal cords and muscles for climbing.
  • The Result: This leads to a permanent “Slump Zone” at the bottom of the hill near Seattle Center. The undead try to climb, their lungs give out, and they either slide back down or get stuck on the sidewalk.

Observations from Caffe Ladro Upper Queen Anne

In Recruiting, I’m used to spotting “Barriers to Entry” for candidates. But on an incline, these barriers are real and impossible to ignore.

  • The Kerry Park Safety Zone: This spot, known for its great views, is like a natural fortress. You won’t see shamblers at the railing because they can’t make it up the 453-foot climb without their lungs giving out.
  • The Fog of War: Lately, thick fog from the Puget Sound has created another layer of defense, which is deadly if you’re a shambler. The heavy, damp air makes every breath a tough, wet struggle.
  • The Counterbalance Slide: When it’s rainy and foggy, failed lungs and slippery pavement turn the bottom of Queen Anne Ave into a pile of “stalled” candidates who couldn’t make it to the top.
  • The 5-Way Intersection: Near the top, this spot works like a natural filter. If a shambler gets this far, they’re usually “high-performers” with unusually healthy lungs — the rare “Executive Level” zombies in the area.

Tactical Recommendations: Surviving the Counterbalance

Since the undead on Queen Anne are either “stalled” at the bottom or “high-performers” at the top, you’ll need to adjust your survival strategy depending on where you are.

1. Use the “Fog-Wall” to Your Advantage

The thick, damp fog is your best cover. You can move through it easily, but shamblers struggle with Pulmonary Edema. Their rotted lungs are basically “drowning” in the humid air.

  • The Strategy: If you’re being chased, don’t run into open areas. Go for the thickest fog near the Kerry Park overlook. The dense air will make the shambler stall out, giving you a few minutes to get away while they “gasp” for air their lungs can’t handle.

2. The “Altitude Squeeze” Maneuver

If you’re trapped near the bottom of the hill, don’t try to fight. Instead, lead your pursuer up the steeper parts of the Counterbalance.

  • The Strategy: Make the shambler follow you uphill. As air pressure drops, their stiff lungs will fail. Watch for the “Collapse Point” — when their diaphragm stops working. Once they “stall out,” you can just walk around them. They’re no longer a threat, just another piece of Queen Anne “sidewalk furniture.”
