One of the biggest mistakes I made when I started blogging was choosing the wrong niche. I used to write on multiple, unrelated topics, and even after publishing blogs for almost 6 months, I didn’t get any results.
Many beginner bloggers make the same mistake, and this is where the 4th wall of bloggers comes, and they quit.
This is why I came up with this blog post idea: so new bloggers won’t make the same mistake I made years ago. Let’s learn how to choose the right niche for blogging.
1. Be Very Specific
What I used to do in my early days of blogging was publish a blog on cricket today, religion tomorrow, and politics the very next day. This was a way too broad niche, and one couldn’t build topical authority with this approach.
You need to be very specific while choosing a niche. The broader the niche, the more difficult it would be for you to build expertise in it.
Take the example of a broad niche, such as Finance. There are thousands of categories in finance, and every category has its own subcategory. Even if you publish 100 blogs a day, you won’t be able to cover the entire Finance domain in 1 year.
“Don’t make the mistake of choosing an unrelated or a broad niche. Your niche should be laser pointed to a specific topic”
A specific niche in the Finance sector is insurance, and you can be more specific by choosing life insurance.
Now, when you write about life insurance, both Google and the readers will know that this writer is a life insurance expert, and your chances of ranking will increase.
2. Choose a Niche for Consistency
How do you choose a Niche for blogging? Well, let me tell you how I did it.
I chose a niche just because I was interested in it. I was interested in cricket, so I started writing about it; I was interested in religion, so I wrote about that as well. But that’s not the right approach.
Just because you are interested in something or have a hobby in something doesn’t mean it can become your blogging niche. Yes, it’s a harsh reality, and you have to digest it.
Always choose a niche in which you can write for years without losing interest.
“Choose a niche in which you can write for years, which is interesting enough for you, and which people are searching for”
You might be interested in football, but can you really write for Football Daily for the next 5 years? Watching football daily and writing for it are two completely different things.
Also, make sure to choose a niche that people are searching for. Use Ubersuggest, enter a keyword for that niche, and check the volume. If it’s zero, choose the next.
3. Know the Intent
Do you know the intent of the seed keywords of the niche you have chosen? No, then you need to do it now.
No need for any fancy SEO tool or days of research for finding the search intent. All you need to do is type your seed keyword in the Google search bar, hit enter, and go through the websites that appear on the first page.
If all the websites are informational, then the search intent is the same. But if top-ranking websites display a list of products, the intent is commercial or transactional.
“Don’t rely on the search intent shown by SEO tools, because they are not always 100% accurate.”
Being clear about the search intent also helps in drafting your blog around that intent.
Blogging is a rewarding journey, but only when you do it right. Digital platforms keep changing, and so does the way we blog. I made many mistakes during the initial phase of blogging in 2017, and that’s why I have also created a list of 25 blogging mistakes you should always avoid.
Among these 25 mistakes, choosing the wrong niche ranks as one of the most common and often ignored. So, before you begin blogging, make sure to choose the right niche.
