AI is becoming infrastructure, not just another digital layer.
I recently revisited my hometown Chengdu, and I experienced the city through a different lens. The buildings, transport systems, EVs, public spaces, and digital services no longer felt like separate observations. They started to feel like layers of one operating system.
That shift became the starting point for my presentation at the @Global5GEvolution Virtual Conference, XCHANGING IDEAS #74: Global 5G Evolution, under the June 2026 theme: “Cloud-AI-Native Infrastructure.”

For me, the most important question is no longer simply, “What can the large language model do?”
It is:
Where should intelligence live?

The Stack — Janet Xiu Shi
In the cloud, at the edge, inside the vehicle, on the road, in a device, or across all of them?
The answer depends on latency, safety, privacy, cost, resilience, governance, and the human context in which the system operates.
This is why AI strategy cannot be separated from cloud, infrastructure, quality assurance, cybersecurity, sustainability, and governance. Large language models alone do not create intelligent cities or intelligent ecosystems. They need data capture, network reliability, compute capacity, edge nodes, power, cooling, security controls, and operational accountability.
The visible layer may be EVs, smart buses, digital payments, navigation, and smoother public services.
But the real intelligence sits underneath, in the hidden stack that allows systems to sense, communicate, decide, and respond responsibly.

My key takeaway is this:
The best AI is experienced, not advertised.
When intelligence is designed well, people do not experience it as technology noise. They experience it as safer crossings, more reliable journeys, better-timed services, fewer failures, and less daily friction.
That is where real infrastructure value comes from.
Not from isolated AI pilots, but from the disciplined integration of AI, quality assurance, governance, cloud, hardware, sustainability, and human-centred design.

This is also the lens I bring into my work to help organisations understand AI not as a magic layer, but as a designed system that needs trustworthy architecture, practical enablement, and responsible adoption.
