with Ponies in the New Forest, Hampshire UK
Every time we return to the UK to visit family, our home base is New Milton. It’s a lovely corner of Hampshire, and because of its location, the New Forest National Park has naturally become one of our go-to spots for a casual stroll.
Despite walking these paths countless times, I realized I had never actually written down our favorite routes or shared a proper guide on the blog. So, after our latest visit, I finally sat down to map it all out for you!
If you are planning a trip to the UK—or if you're a local looking for a weekend escape—here is what makes a day trip to the New Forest so incredibly special, along with a few essential tips I've learned over the years.

As you can see in the Vlog above, Chris takes you along on our walk to show you just how magical this place is!
The real charm of the New Forest lies in its freedom. One of the most enchanting parts of walking here is coming across the famous New Forest ponies. They roam completely free through the heathlands and wooded glades, completely unfazed by the world around them.
It’s not just a haven for wildlife, though; it’s a vibrant community space. On any given day, you’ll share the trails with locals out for a morning jog, families setting up idyllic picnics under ancient trees, and plenty of happy dogs fetching sticks. There is a beautifully relaxed, slow-paced atmosphere that immediately makes you forget the bustle of the city.
Two Things You Absolutely Need to Pack
If you’re heading out for a walk here, there are two practical things I always tell people to prepare for:
- Proper Footwear (Expect Mud!): Even on a beautiful day, the New Forest can be notoriously muddy and waterlogged, especially in the shaded woodland areas. Ditch the white sneakers and wear sturdy, waterproof walking shoes or hiking boots.
- Sun Protection: While the woods offer plenty of shade, the routes often open up into vast, exposed heathlands and meadows. There is nowhere to hide from the sun out there, so definitely apply sunscreen and bring a hat, even if the British weather looks overcast at first.
