A Texas woman is on the run after leaving her children home alone for six weeks earlier this year, Lone Star State law enforcement says.

Rayshawna Dowdell, 34, is accused of intentionally abandoning the two children, allegedly leaving them exposed to an unreasonable risk of harm.

According to charging documents, the children were left without adequate adult supervision, protection, or ready access to food for an extended period, and authorities allege there was no intention of returning.

Court records indicate that the Harris County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by someone who reported concerns regarding two girls she had encountered at a nearby playground.

The caller reported that an 11-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl had disclosed to her that they had been left unattended by their mother and did not know when anyone would return.

The girls had been staying with her ( the caller), who had prepared them food.

That claim triggered an immediate welfare check at the family’s home.

Deputies who responded to the home described it as unkempt, unsecured, and lacking sufficient resources to feed two children. The house’s rear door was reportedly unlocked when they arrived.

“These conditions are consistent with the absence of adult supervision and support [the 11-year-old’s] disclosure that she and her sibling were forced to manage their own basic needs for an extended period,” the criminal complaint continues.

According to court records, the 11-year-old stated that she was responsible for caring for her 6-year-old sibling, including preparing for school, managing daily needs, and attempting to obtain food.

The 11-year-old said there was no adult present in the home for a six-week period.

The alleged absentee mother had continued to communicate with the older children remotely and occasionally sent meals via Uber Eats.

Recovered text messages revealed the older daughter was “distressed and afraid”, expressing concerns about caring for her younger sibling and not having enough food.

Here is where the case takes on many twists and turns.

As a result of investigations conducted by HCSO and Child Protective Services, the girls were placed with the older child’s aunt, according to court records. That arrangement did not last long. Officials say the placement broke down after an alleged physical altercation, during which Dowdell reportedly took the children from the aunt’s care.

CPS workers attempted to contact the family multiple times, and deputies conducted at least five welfare checks at addresses associated with the family, according to court documents reported by KPRC. Each time, investigators came up short in locating Dowdell.

Due to Dowdell’s actions, “including providing misleading information, evading law enforcement, and failing to provide verifiable supervision, the children’s whereabouts were unknown for a period of time, increasing concern for their safety,” police intend to pursue a felony charge, per the charging document.

The children were eventually found during a welfare check in Ohio.

As of May 4, Dowdell remained at large, according to FOX 26 Houston.

Prosecutors have already set her bail at $50,000 on a felony charge of abandoning a child without the intention to return.

The investigation remains active, with Harris County detectives working alongside CPS to follow up on leads and evaluate whether additional charges might be warranted.

Authorities say they are asking for the public’s help from anyone who may have information on Dowdell’s whereabouts.

Prosecutors are expected to determine the next steps and whether additional charges will be filed once she is located and the full case file is reviewed.
