From the Sidelines to the Circle: 10 Years Later
It’s been 10 years since I joined college. That realization hit me just a couple of days ago — not like a loud bang, but slow and steady, like a quiet burn that stays with you.
I was driving us home, my best friend riding shotgun — he’d flown in for a short vacation from the country he now calls home. We were catching up on life, work, all the changes. Somewhere between the laughter and the stories, it started to sink in — it’s been a whole decade since we first stepped into college.
And then my mind drifted back.
Back in school, I was always the quiet one. Head down. Often asleep at the desk, lost in my own world. I wasn’t the kid people waited for during lunch breaks or looked for in group photos. I can count on one hand the number of people who ever really noticed me — maybe just one, honestly. I didn’t feel unwanted, just invisible. Like I passed through those years without really leaving a mark.
But college? That hit different.
From the start, I was part of things. In the middle of conversations, plans, mischief. I was in clubs, random explorations, long debates, and impulsive ideas. I was there — involved, active, present. Even in the harmless chaos. I was never the guy with full attendance, but I was never absent from the memories that mattered.
College didn’t just give me friends — it gave me a place. A space where I was seen. Included. Thought of. Not because I changed overnight, but because for the first time, I was invited into other people’s worlds. And somehow, I fit right in.
That shift — from drifting alone to belonging without trying too hard — it’s something I’ll never take for granted. Most people don’t crave attention. They crave connection. Acceptance. And for me, college was where that started.
Life’s moved on — new places, new routines, new versions of ourselves. But that car ride brought it all rushing back. Not just the memories, but the shift in who I was and who I became — because a few people chose to see me, include me, and hold space for me.
Time doesn’t pause, but some feelings settle deep.
Being accepted — truly seen, truly welcomed — doesn’t just fill a moment. It fills a part of you that stays full, no matter how far you go.
