Fargo 4, A+

Similar to previous seasons of Fargo, the story is a self contained narrative loosely connected to the history of the Fargo crime syndicate. This time around, the focus is on warring factions in Kansas City, Missouri. On one side of the city is the Italian mafia led by Josto Fadda (played by Jason Schwartzman), and on the other side is the Black mafia led by Loy Cannon (played by Chris Rock).

However, in what seems to be a controversial choice, the protagonist of the season is a teenage girl, Ethelrida Pearl Smutny, played by E’myri Crutchfield. Her storyline is efficiently the “wrapper”, between the A story (Black mafia) and B story (Italian mafia).

Everything unwraps with lots of time-appropriate mundane tasks and vernacular, plenty of memorable characters, and subversive choices (to say the least) in the direction provided to the production.

I can see and understand the complaints I’ve read online, but in my opinion this was close to perfection. The biggest problem is how disconnected the first episode is from the rest of the season. Almost as if there was a focus shift due to some other media released at the time (e.g. Watchmen, *Lovecraft Country*) which focused on period specific Black stories. But at the same time the racists out there seem to have forgotten what Season 2 was all about…
