Gilda Review

Filmed immediately after the end of the Second World War, Gilda eventually became a cult classic. A gangster movie with a sick romantic triangle. Rita Hayworth was at the height of her powers, not only as a sex bomb but also as an actress.

The plot is convoluted, but the acting is not. The scene in which Gilda greets her hated lover for the first time is legendary, adding to Hayworth’s allure as she swivels her bare shoulders and stares at him seductively.

The finale could have been sharper if the femme fatale — Hayworth portrayed had gotten her deserved comeuppance, but who can quibble with her acting and singing voice?

They rock.

Hayworth went through five failed marriages and died of Alzheimer's in her mid-sixties. That was certainly a tragedy for America’s sweetheart during the dawn of the emerging Pax Americana.
