The Illusion of Good and Evil

We often speak of Good and Evil as if we know them — as if somewhere in the world there exists a pure act, an absolute saint, or a perfect villain. But look closely, and these mountains of certainty dissolve into mist.

What we call good is often just the light that happens to fall on our side of the hill. A soldier who dies for his country is a hero to his people, a monster to the enemy, and to the stars above — only dust returning to dust. Even the tender act of loving one’s own child quietly prefers one life over another.

Perhaps there is no absolute Good or Evil in this world — only shifting patterns of meaning, each bound to its perspective. What is evil for one heart may be good for another; what is cruelty to us may be necessity to nature. The world itself feeds on this sacred tension: creation devours, death renews, and from that endless exchange life endures.

Maybe Good and Evil are not opposites in some cosmic design, but names we give to the directions of our longing — the invisible meridians we draw upon the moral globe, useful for navigation though never inscribed upon the earth.

Yet, the longing for the Absolute never leaves us. And perhaps that longing — the ache for a Good untouched by shadow — is the holiest part of being human: the whisper of the Infinite remembered in the heart of the finite.
