How Did I Get Here?

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Recently, I found the time to go back to my old high school so I could finally pick up my diploma. It was weird, but exciting. I remember the tight feeling in my chest when I got off the bus. The same stop I had been getting off at for 5 years prior, now used by new students. This year things are different. I’m at a new school, new city, have new classmates, and new friends. I found myself feeling extremely nostalgic walking through the leaf ridden walkway between duel roundabouts. It was beautiful, ethereal even. It felt like I was walking into an old childhood home, years after moving out.

Visiting High School as a Post Secondary Student was definitely interesting. It made me realize just how much what I did in high school affected what I’m doing now. In turn, I found a bit of closure given the big change in schools.

What Did I Even Want to Do?

I had 3 options or plans for post secondary, Business Administration, Accounting, or ‘something in the radio industry.’

For the longest time, I had my heart and mind both set on Business Administration, applying and completing a BBA at SFU’s Beedie School of Business. It wasn’t until grade twelve where things started to change. Business Admin was out, suddenly my mind was set on accounting and my heart was set on being on air. Both of these newfound passions had come from my time in both Student Council and E-Commerce.

Starting in grade eleven, I began actively writing and being the voice for my high schools morning announcements. Sure, it was only for Student Council events to begin with, but I learned so much in time. My skills developed greatly and I genuinely loved doing it. There were even times where, if our Administrative Coordinator (She was basically my mentor, and the reason the entire school ran as well as it did) was sick or away, I would do the entire set of morning announcements. It was always nerve wracking, but I always left the office with a sense of pride.

Furthermore, in grade twelve, I took an accounting course. Had I even known my school had an accounting class to begin with, I likely would’ve done it sooner! I had been Student Council treasurer (Both officially and unofficially) for just over two years at that point, so it was something I already had experience in. The class was very interesting, and taught me basics that I never knew as I was sort of self taught in a number of ways. Mentally, I knew a future in accounting would be smart from a realistic standpoint.

Why Radio?

Speaking of being realistic, you may be thinking, “Why go into radio??” It’s a fair question! With the way the world is going, concern is anything if not valid. My thought process is pretty simple (at least I think it is, feel free to disagree). If there’s any time to experiment with my passions, directly after high school would be the best, right?

Either way, I still have the option to pursue accounting after I’m done with this program. Whether or not I will is still up for debate, and I plan to decide after graduation.

All and all, I’m very happy with where I am. I can’t wait to see where else this program takes me, and I’m excited to bring you all with me on the journey!
