The email arrived at 2 AM. Sophie had forwarded her practice SAT results silently. 480 in Reading and Writing. She needed 650 for Northwestern. My seventeen-year-old, who once argued about book endings at Sunday lunch, now stared at walls in our garden shed.

“Mum, I read the same paragraph five times and see nothing,” she whispered that evening. “My brain goes white.”
