Egypt’s economy holds lots of potential due to its location, natural resources, and the youth in their workforce, however it faces significant challenges, according to this episode of Economics Explained. The Suez Canal, through which 12–13% of global trade passes through, is a vital source of revenue for Egypt. There have been some disruptions like attacks near Yemen, which demonstrate the vulnerability of it and how being too reliable on it can cause issue. Any interruption in the canal’s operation impacts both Egypt and the global economy, as seen with billions of dollars in trades being delayed.

The Nile River is equally as critical, which supports agriculture, trade, and transportation for a population of about 104 million. However, Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam threatens to reduce water flow, creating tensions that could further destabilize Egypt’s economy. Domestically, a growing manufacturing sector benefits from low labor and transport costs, but progress is hindered by public debt, high interest rates, and a struggling currency.

Moreover, extravagant projects — like a $58 billion new capital city — divert resources from essential needs, while political instability deters foreign investment. Despite a diverse economy and strong growth in manufacturing, these systemic issues limit progress. Egypt’s potential as a regional and global economic power can only be brought to life through meaningful reforms to stabilize their governance, finding ways to reduce debt, and optimize its unique advantages, especially as it relates to the aforementioned natural resources.
