New ‘Darna’ trailer shows glimpse of Valentina

She embodies all things twisted and evil, but most importantly, she is lethal. And, behold, let us all say, “Ding, ang bato!” because Valentina isn’t going anywhere.

After several adaptations from the 1950s to the early 2000s, Mars Ravelo’s Darna is up for another re-imagining, with Jane De Leon playing the iconic role. But playing the most popular Filipina hero in Pinoy pop culture is not to be taken lightly, and so is Valentina.

After all, for heroes to be iconic, they must have an archnemesis that can match their goodness with evil for a great contrast. So for every Batman, there’s a Joker. And in the Philippines, the opposite of Darna is Valentina: the evil serpent queen.

Playing Darna’s iconic villain is Janella Salvador. However, despite the excitement it brought to fans, the previous teaser didn’t showcase Valentina’s transformation into her snake-haired alter ego. Instead, it only highlighted a brief appearance of Valentina’s human form, Regina.

But luckily, much to the fans’ excitement, the second trailer for the upcoming TV series on Friday shared a glimpse of Valentina’s transformation, showing her shadow on a wall that accentuates her snake hair, with her forehead filled with snake scales and eyes similar to a reptile.

The fans of Valentina and Darna alike quickly took to Twitter to express their excitement, with others tweeting “Team Valentina” and “Valentina Apologists,” seemingly showing that they are rooting more for the villain.

“I volunteer as the first victim, Valentina,” a fan tweeted.

Valentina has been dubbed the wicked monster in the long history of Darna. However, for the forthcoming adaptation, fans hope to see more of Valentina’s character arc as a human other than her villain self.

The latest Darna series is directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Chito Roño and is scheduled to premiere on August 15 this year.

It’s for you to decide who to root for. But with De Leon’s outstanding take on Darna and Salvador’s head-to-toe Valentina, it’s going to be a tough one, for sure. While waiting, you can watch the Darna teaser below.
