One well-known example is Dexter Morgan from the TV show Dexter. Unlike typical serial killers, Dexter follows a strict code and only targets criminals who have escaped justice. His character presents a morally complex situation, where a killer is shown as someone trying to deliver justice. Another character from the same series is Brian Moser, also known as the Ice Truck Killer. His actions are driven by trauma and a desire to reconnect with his past, showing how psychological damage can shape a person’s behavior in dangerous ways.

If I were a serial killer, the world would probably never see me coming. Not because I would be clever or dangerous, but because people often fail to notice what lies beneath the surface of ordinary faces. I imagine I would not be the monster people expect. I would be someone quiet, someone who blends into the crowd, someone who smiles politely and speaks softly. Because the truth is, the most dangerous things are not always loud—they are silent, unnoticed, and ignored.

My beloved friend Ken once suddenly told me that someone was stalking her and that she felt threatened. A day later, she even gave me the stalker’s social media accounts and asked me to talk to him. So I reached out to that guy. He admitted that he liked her, but what disturbed me was that he also said if Ken rejected him, he might harm her. I tried to reason with him, but he wouldn’t listen. Instead, he sent me Ken’s address, her real name, and some of her personal details. At that moment, something felt off… something familiar. It almost felt like Ken was testing me. But I didn’t take any chances. I became completely focused—locked in—and started digging into the stalker’s identity to find out who he really was. And when I finally uncovered the truth, I was shocked. It was Ken all along. She just wanted to see how far I would go for her. In the end, she said, “It’s me, my sugarplum.” But the truth is… if that stalker had been real, and if Ken had actually been harmed— he would have been my first kill. And after that… it wouldn’t have stopped there.

A Cycle of a Serial Killer

The “cycle” of a serial killer refers to a repeating pattern of thoughts and actions that eventually lead to multiple crimes over time. While not every case is exactly the same, psychologists have identified a common sequence that many serial offenders tend to follow. It usually begins with the fantasy stage, where the individual develops intense and disturbing thoughts. These fantasies often involve control, power, or violence, and they grow stronger over time as the person becomes more absorbed in them. This is followed by the planning stage, where the individual starts thinking about how to turn these fantasies into reality. They may mentally prepare, observe situations, or imagine possible outcomes, even if no action has been taken yet. Next comes the acting stage, where the individual carries out the crime. This is the most dangerous phase, as the thoughts are finally turned into real actions. After the act, there is often a period of temporary relief or satisfaction. The individual may feel a sense of release, as if the internal tension or urge has been reduced. Then comes the cooling-off period, which is what separates serial killers from other types of criminals. During this time, the individual may return to normal life, showing no obvious signs of their actions. This phase can last days, months, or even years.
