Every four years, the FIFA World Cup rekindles the hype of football fans all over the world, and with it, all the old memes and juicy bits resurface and pour over the internet.

Nowadays amplified by AI and social media, these memes come to life when the fans print them on t-shirts and banners and bring them to the stadium with them, calling out to the players and encouraging them to reenact or, at very least, acknowledge the memes.

And such is the case with the Dictator Mbappe meme that took over the World Cup lately. The origin of the meme goes back further than anyone, including the dictator himself, is willing to admit.

Starting back when the former wonderkid Kylian Mbappe became the MVP of PSG in 2018, there were rumors that he was more involved in the team than his role as a player would have allowed.

Pundits claimed Kylian could veto the decisions of the management, including who gets to play, who doesn’t, which new players get signed, and what players leave the club.

Supposedly, everything depended on his fickle mood, and nobody, from coaches to teammates, was safe.

The same thing allegedly happened when he transferred to Real Madrid in 2024 and throughout his entire career with the French national team.

Someone who touched his hair the wrong way, pushed him too hard during training, laughed at something he said, or looked at him the wrong way was out in a matter of… well… days, weeks, months, or years depending on the case.

Fans rushed to turn any coincidence or allegation into an internet meme. But the crazy thing is some of them seem almost too real to be a joke.

The dictator allegations started after Mbappe refused to give Barcelona a guard of honor this year after the Catalans won the Spanish Super Cup against a bitter Real Madrid side. Herding his teammates away from the pitch, the dictator went against the intention of his own coach, former Real Madrid star player, Xavi Alonso:

The next day, Xavi left Real Madrid by “mutual consent,” but fans loved to claim it was the hand of Dictator Mbappe, and a few months later they even sang him songs:

The Arab fans went even further with the dictator angle, mashing Mbappe memes and clips with Ana Maradun (I Am An Illness), a famous Islamic chant from the early 2000s that was meant to be a warning against bad habits and sins (in this case, against the dictator’s power trip):

In preparation for the 2026 World Cup, the dictator hype peaked when even President Macron and his delegation played second fiddle to Mbappe when they met the French National Team ahead of the tournament:

Mind you that what you see in the video above is real footage. Although slightly tampered with by AI (i.e., Mbappe dressed in a general costume), the pictures, positions, events, and actions are real.

Everybody seemed to be treating Mbappe like a king, and he appears to openly enjoy it (making others lean forward when shaking hands and such), so the truth and meme have become even harder to distinguish.

I mean, check out this crazy news headline dating slightly before the World Cup:

The man was out there walking around with a bodyguard, a bodyguard that wasn’t even his in the first place. It's almost as if he can command troops at will, like a true dictator!

Football fans hoisted a Dictator Mbappe banner at literally the first match France played at the 2026 World Cup, against Senegal. The words on everybody’s lips were, “No way he didn’t see that!”

A few days after the match, the French National Team’s staff decided to rest most of their first-team players during the follow-up training session, in preparation for their next game, against Iraq.

During this training session, Kylian was spotted resting on an elevated platform that gave him a bird's-eye view over the training grounds, along with the observing staff:

The fans once again loved to speculate that he was only enjoying his already known privileges as a whimsical and eccentric dictator.

“He’s never beating the dictator allegations now,” everybody said for the 1000th time that month alone, as folks started to edit the newest footage into the dictator meme.

By this time, older footage of him checking the referee's watch in a match against Spain from 2025 was also included in the meme:

Fast forward to the next game, and Mbappe had even less of a chance of beating the dictator allegations when he was filmed firmly instructing the groundsmen where to mop the rain-battered pitch ahead of the France vs. Iraq match:

During France’s final match in the group stage, against Norway, the dictator memes resurfaced when Mbappe gave his captain armband to the referee so that the latter could pass it to another French player as he was substituted out.

This move was done to save time, because in football the clock is not stopped like in other sports, and unjustified delays with zero play time are often frowned upon or sanctioned with extra time.

However, even knowing that did not deter the fans from incorporating the new footage into the dictator memes: Dictator Mbappe was doing what everyone would expect of him, bossing around the referee.

Nobody was safe!

The fan’s hysteria peaked during France’s round of 32 match against Sweden, when Mbappe finally acknowledged the dictator memes with the same gesture the fans used as a reaction to his memes — a dictator military salute — in celebration of his goal:

Later on in the game, when the by-now-already-established Dictator Mbappe was substituted out, his own coach, Didier Deschamps, bowed to him, inflating the hype even further:

At the end of the match, Dictator Mbappe made the fans shudder, explaining the motivation behind his military salute celebration:

“They try to label me as a ‘dictator,’ so I decided to give them something to talk about.”

He knows about the memes. He knew all along!

And the hype went on.

After France's last-16 match against Paraguay, in which the South American team employed every “dark art” and foul play known to man, trying to impede, deter, and even injure the French team from scoring a goal, the French coach, Didier Deschamps, has admitted that it wasn’t the first time he took special measures to protect Dictator Mbappe:

“They know how to play like that — and in the end, we’re the ones who get punished. We got two yellow cards, while they committed endless fouls that weren’t even penalized.

Especially with Kylian. I still remember 2018 against Uruguay, when I had to take him off because otherwise they would have practically kicked him to pieces. I immediately instructed the two strongest players on the bench to protect him after the final whistle, because you never know. A match is never really over, and I don’t want to lose any player.”

New memes were created starring Dictator Mbappe while being protected by his teammates and soldiers.

And the hype did not stop there.

Dictator Mbappe has transcended the France games. Fans have been observed hoisting the following banner at the Portugal vs. Spain match the next week, one day after France had passed, or, some should say, survived Paraguay:

The “VAR (video-assisted referee) is waiting for Kylian’s approval” message could be a subtle jab at FIFA’s controversial decision to remove Balogun’s red card and his one-match ban during the USA vs. Belgium game that took place the next day.

Reportedly, this decision was politically influenced after Donald Trump intervened and convinced FIFA’s president, Infantino, to lift Balogun’s sanction.

However, football fans reminded everyone who the real dictator is!

There’s no indication that the memes would stop here.

Even further, a holy meme war is awaiting us should France and Norway meet each other in the final.

Both players have already reached peak maturity, so maybe this is the moment we all have been waiting for.
