Mistakes

TDW #47: Itch

My first mistake is waiting for someone to open the door for me. Sometimes, I forget that I’m a nobody.

My second mistake is thinking about the past. My husband’s laughter is but a cold comfort.

I’ve wrung out all the warmth from all my memories, and only ghosts remain.

Oh, how I wish I hadn’t spoken to Jim!

I reject the urge to itch my back, just as I angrily dare my tears to leave the confines of my lashes.

I don’t deserve any comfort.

Presently, I wring out the sponge, ready to wash the dirty plates. My third mistake is — just for a moment — turning to look for my mother. She always washed the dishes with me.

But most of the time, oh, how I wish I hadn’t looked back at Jim a second time.

How I wish I hadn’t believed the dreams he whispered into my ears.

I don’t deserve to wish.
