England Coast Path — Day 4: Seahouses to Alnmouth

Today is my last day of walking over the Easter weekend, having racked up 101km in total! I started with a one-hour bus to Seahouses where I had a fish and chips lunch before starting off.

Seahouses is a small town, but was busy today with Easter visitors. The boat trips to the Farne Islands would have been on choppy waters as it was still very windy from Storm Dave. The path heads south over some dunes to Beadnell before running around Beadnell Bay. I was expecting some showers so wasn’t disappointed when the heavens opened but with the stiff wind it quickly passed. The path then passed Low Newton-by-the-Sea — a tiny hamlet owned by the National Trust with a small square that opened onto the beach.

After this the path follows Embleton Bay through a golf course to Dunstanburgh Castle. The green by the castle must have one of the best views of any golf course green! The path continued south to the small harbour village of Craster and then on to Boulmer. After Boulmer the path runs through yet another golf course, and actually passes through the patio area of the clubhouse!

A short walk then brought me into the beautiful town of Alnmouth. This looks to be a lovely place to visit with several eateries available and amazing views over the River Aln. It looked particularly spectacular today, basking in the golden light of the setting sun.

Travel options

Seahouses is served by the X18 bus between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but there are only three services a day in each direction. There is also the 0918 bus which has two services each way between Belford and Chathill via Seahouses. These are timed to connect with the two return train services between Newcastle and Chathill.

Alnmouth has a railway station served by hourly trains between Newcastle and Edinburgh as well as several LNER services between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh. There are additional CrossCountry services to destinations as far away as Cardiff and Penzance! The station is a 2km walk from the village of Alnmouth but only about 800m from the coast path. The village of Alnmouth is also served by the X18 bus which runs hourly at this point between Newcastle and Alnwick. Additionally, the X20 bus runs hourly between Newcastle and Alnwick with stops in Hipsburn near the railway station.
