A Man Is Not Born From Applause

Maturity is tested by composure, loss, restraint, and endurance

Men are often trained to confuse silence with strength. I was. My parents did not cry in public. But my teachers praised the boys who did not complain. Later, as a faculty member, I discovered that academia also prefers men who suffer quietly, especially if they keep publishing.

What inspired me to write this article is what we read as a mantra (or motivational speeches) for becoming a man. Some parts are still cut cleanly. Do not be ruled by panic. Do not let success make you stupid. Do not become dishonest because others lie efficiently. These are useful demands. I have repeated some version of them to students standing at the edge of collapse.

But there is danger in turning composure into religion. A man can keep his face calm while his life rots behind it. A man can endure betrayal, debt, insult, and exhaustion until endurance becomes his only personality. Then the world calls him admirable because he has become convenient.

Foreign men in professional spaces live inside a narrow script. Be strong enough to justify the visa. Be soft enough not to frighten the committee. Be grateful, precise, available, and never too wounded by the little humiliations. If you speak sharply, you are aggressive. If you speak gently, you are uncertain. If you show pain, you become a story people do not know how to file.

I once taught an entire week after learning that my father’s condition had worsened. The time difference turned every phone call into a small emergency. In class, I explained experimental design. In my office, I watched the phone. A student later wrote that I seemed distant. She was correct. Professionalism is sometimes just grief wearing a belt.

The old model of manhood would praise that week. I do not. I did what was necessary, and some of it was cowardice. I did not tell colleagues because I feared appearing unstable. I did not ask for help because I had built a reputation on reliability. Pride can look exactly like discipline from a distance.

Still, the opposite is not self-indulgence. I have no interest in a masculinity that excuses every mood as trauma and every failure as society’s fault. A man must learn restraint. He must not turn pain into a license to harm others. He must not make his family live under the weather of his career.

The bitter truth is that maturity gives no certificate. You can do the right thing and feel smaller afterward. You can lose money, status, sleep, and still be expected to greet the morning as if it owes you nothing.

Some evenings, after the students leave, I slowly erase the board. Chalk dust sticks to the lines in my palm. I think of my father, of the men who never learned the language for what hurt them, of my son learning from whatever I fail to hide. The room becomes clean. That is not the same as being whole.
