Why I Tell Black History Stories

I tell Black history stories because history does not preserve itself.

Some stories are repeated often, but not always with care. Some stories are shortened until the meaning gets lost. Some names become symbols, but the real person behind the name disappears. Some events are remembered by date, but not by impact. And some stories are still treated like footnotes when they shaped entire communities, movements, families, and futures.

LataraSpeaksTruth exists because I believe these stories deserve more than a quick mention.

Black history is not only pain. It is invention, music, resistance, faith, style, education, military service, family, business, language, survival, brilliance, and culture. It is the story of people who built, created, challenged, taught, performed, protected, organized, and kept going even when the world tried to erase the evidence.

I do not tell these stories to make history feel heavy just for the sake of heaviness. I tell them because context matters.

When a person is reduced to one sentence, we lose the fuller picture. When an event is explained too simply, we miss what came before it and what followed after. When a culture is talked about without the people who shaped it, the story becomes incomplete.

That is why I care about storytelling.

A story can correct what was left out. A story can bring dignity back to a name. A story can remind people that the past was not abstract. It was lived by real people with families, dreams, choices, losses, talents, and legacies.

On LataraSpeaksTruth, I share Black history because it deserves to be seen as history, not a side note. I share cultural stories because culture carries memory. I share tributes because people should not have to be gone before their work is honored. I share visual storytelling because sometimes an image can make someone stop long enough to read what they might have skipped.

This work is part research, part reflection, and part preservation.

I am not trying to make every story comfortable. I am trying to make every story matter.

Because Black history is not separate from American history. It is not separate from music history, military history, sports history, education, invention, law, entertainment, or culture. It runs through all of it.

And if the story is worth remembering, then it is worth telling with care.
